1 Britain’s Ageing Population The causes, effects and challenges

2 Britain’s Population The UK population in 2008 was 61,383,000 Children aged under 16 represented 20% of the total population. 16% of the population is aged 65+ The average age of the population is 38 years A sharp tapering for people aged 31 to 37 reflects low fertility in the 1970s. Also occurs between the ages of 7 and 20 reflecting the low fertility rates from the late 1980s to early 2000s. The pyramid shows the ‘bulge’ of the ‘baby boomers’ born in the 1960s moving into the older ages. From the age of 71 onwards, females outnumber males more. This reflects the higher life expectancy of women at older ages and higher male mortality during the Second World War.

3 Predictions for the future…. Animated Population Pyramid Describe what happens to the size of the population between 1971 and 2083 What happens to the shape of the pyramid? Draw the pyramids for 2009 and 2083 Explain what is happening to the UK’s population

There is also a massive black hole in the Government’s pension pot……. YouTube - BBC Pensions
