Order of Operations

Learning Goals Understand that an expression is a mathematical statement with numbers and operations. (x, +, -, ÷) Use the correct order of operations.

4+6x7 = 70 4+6x7 = 46 Is either equation correct? Explain your thinking.

When you solve a problem that uses more than one operation, the answer depends on the order in which you perform the operations. An expression is a mathematical statement with numbers and operations. When we calculate the answer, we solve the expression.

We use brackets if we want certain operations carried out first. To make sure everyone gets the same answer when solving an expression, we use this order of operations. The order of operations is: B rackets M ultiply and D ivide (in order from left to right) A dd and S ubtract (in order from left to right)

Solve: 16-14÷2 18-10+6 7 x (4+8)

4x7-2+14x(7-2)+1 4x7-(2-1)4x(7-2+1) (4x7-2)+14X7-(2+1)
