Xerographic printing is complex and involves engineering the coordination of many inputs.
Like many complex technologies, print output is altered by changes in it’s inputs, like, for example, environmental conditions such as humidity. In order to maintain optimum performance and quality, printers (and monitors) occasionally need to be calibrated, a process which restores the device to a known state.
PhaserCal, standard on all configurations, is a component of PhaserMatch software which enables calibration of Phaser 7800 using data input from a piece of hardware called a spectrophotometer*, which measures color as a function of light reflection.
Printer calibration is only part of the color management puzzle. Paying customers want to know that the color of their final production run looks the same as what they see in drafts, comps and proofs. The problem is that the creative professionals designing output typically print to different devices than those used for large production runs. PhaserMatch 5.0 is a software solution to this problem.
PhaserMatch enables matching the color of printed output from Phaser 7800 to the color of a monitor, projector, or any other output device. This process utilizes a Xerox branded spectrophotometer- PhaserMeter**, powered by X-Rite- which comes bundled with the PhaserMatch 5.0 software. PhaserMatch 5.0 and PhaserMeter come standard with the Phaser 7800 GX, or optional with the DN or DX.
Here’s how it works. Guided by the wizard’s clear instructions, PhaserMeter measures Phaser 7800 color, and creates an ICC profile for it. Similarly, it can create an ICC profile for any other output device. When selecting “create a custom color,” the software links the two profiles through a complex set of calculations, allowing Phaser 7800 to emulate the color of the other output device. That color correction gets sent to and stored on Phaser 7800 and will appear in the printer driver through bi-directional communication. With a few clicks, customers can make their color prints from the Phaser 7800 match their monitor, their favorite digital press, or any other output device desired!
NOTE:
All Phaser 7800 configurations include a CD with PhaserMatch 5.0 software. PhaserCal is a feature within PhaserMatch 5.0 (See “Calibrate my Phaser 7800” from screenshot, shown above), enabled on all configurations out the box. The other functions, shown above, will be grayed out until enabled by connection of PhaserMeter, which comes bundled with PhaserMatch 5.0.

The base model is the DN, offering all the color print quality, speed, and two-sided printing capabilities as standard features in a desktop form-factor. The GX configuration makes the Phaser 7800 a floor-standing printer, with four-trays supporting large-media sizes for 2,180 sheets of maximum paper capacity. This configuration also includes PhaserMatch 5.0 software and the PhaserMeter – making it an optimized configuration for graphic-intensive environments. The last configuration features the high-capacity tandem tray for up to 3,140 sheets of paper capacity.

Everyone can get the color right
Color By Words has been mentioned a couple times to this point, but I wanted to spend a moment talking about it. This feature, found in the driver for the Phaser 7800, gives office users with no graphic arts background the ability to easily get the colors of their prints the way they want them. This is enabled with simple, natural-language commands that adjust colors to your expectations without requiring the source file. For example, the slide just showed the command that would make green colors more vivid – you simply pick what you want to change (what color, or maybe foliage or sky colors), how much you want to change it (from a lot less to completely), and what you want to change it to (either a different color, or a command like more vivid, warm, colorful, etc).

Another Xerox innovation that has been brought to the Phaser 7800 is Print Around, a capability tailored for today’s busy environments. It keeps the printer as busy as possible to avoid backups due to required interventions.
This slide illustrates how Print Around works – the printer has three trays, two are loaded with letter and one should have legal, but it has run out. Three jobs are sent to the printer – the first requiring legal, the two following jobs requiring letter. In the past, the printer would have shown the red error indicator and asked for legal paper to be loaded, so the first job could be printed – holding up the following two jobs as well (that, by the way, have the required media loaded).
With Print Around, the work doesn’t stop. The job that requires legal is set aside, while the following two jobs “print around” the interruption. When legal paper is finally loaded, the first job will be printed.
