2 In 1866 an English doctor named John Langdon Down published a description of the disorder It has been around since the beginning of Humans John Down named Down Syndrome after his last name

3 Decreased muscle tone at birth Excess skin at nape of neck Flattened Nose Separated joints between bones Single crease in palm of hand Small ears and mouth Upward slanting eyes Short hands and fingers White spots on colored part of eye

4 Three types of abnormal cell division involving chromosome 21 occurs Trisomy 21- 3 copies of chromosome 21 90% of Down Syndrome cases Mosaic Syndrome- some cells have an extra copy of chromosome 21 Translocation Syndrome- a chromosome attaches to another chromosome before or during conception

5 One in every 691 babies in the U.S. is born with D.S. There are more than 400,000 people in the US live with D.S. D.S. occurs in people of all races and economic levels D.S. people used to only live until 25 but with recent advances in medicine they can now live to 60!
