CAUSE AND EFFECT The What? And Why? of Stuff...

CAUSE The cause of an event is the REASON it happened The WHY something happened The cause will always happen FIRST... EXAMPLE: We had homework because we didn’t finish in class. WHY did we have homework? We didn’t finish in class...

EFFECT The effect is WHAT happened. The outcome of something. The effect always happens second. EX: We had homework because we didn’t finish in class. What happened? We had homework.

BE ON THE LOOK OUT! Some of these words may help you figure out CAUSE or EFFECT! Because So Therefore Then And

FOR EXAMPLE The CAUSE usually comes right after BECAUSE I had a headache because the music was too loud. WHY did I have a headache? What was the reason? The music was too loud. (Cause of my headache) The EFFECT usually comes after SO The music was too loud so I had a headache. What happened because the music was too loud? I had a headache. (Effect of the loud music)

FOR EXAMPLE, CONTINUED EFFECT usually comes after THEREFORE It was a very windy day; therefore, we were able to fly a kite. What was the outcome of the windy day? We could fly a kite. (What happened because of the wind) EFFECT comes after THEN or AND (because effect always happens second!) I did a good job, then I got a raise. What happened because I did a good job? What was the outcome? I got a raise.

TRY THESE Tell if the underlined part is the cause or effect in the sentence. Anne had a party at school because it was her birthday. Jack was sick so he didn’t go to school. The football game was cancelled because it was raining so hard. Jacob woke up late, so he missed the bus. Melissa was hungry, so she got a snack.
