3 Sugar-Sweetened Drinks What are they? A Sugar-sweetened drink is any non-alcoholic beverage with an added sugar-based, caloric sweetener, including sucrose, fructose, glucose, high fructose corn syrup, and other sugars. SSDs include: – Soda – non-100%-fruit drinks – sports drinks – flavored water – energy drinks – pre-sweetened coffee and tea

4 Sugar-sweetened drinks are the largest single source of added sugar in the American diet – We are consuming 200-300 more calories than 30 yr/ago – Half of these calories are from sugar-sweetened beverages – Extra calories = Extra weight – One can of soda/day = 10 pounds weight gain/year Sugar-Sweetened Drinks So What?
