Impetigo and Ecthyma By: Melissa Douglas Porsha McGuire

2 Description Scientific Description: Impetigo – a bacterial skin infection cause by the staphylococcus or streptococcus bacteria. Common Skin infection for little kids The bacteria gets into the surface of skin by bug bites, scratches, or some kind of break in the skin. The bacteria will then make blisters filled with pus. After the blister bursts, it will leave a crust.

3 Diagram of Layers of Skin

4 3 Types of Impetigo 1. Impetigo Contagiosa 2. Bullous Impetigo
Most Common Occurs around nose or mouth Small red sores seen with the streptococcus strain of bacteria 2. Bullous Impetigo caused by the staphylococcus aureus bacteria Large painless blisters occur which can cause fever, diarrhea, and body weakness

5 Continued 3. Ecthyma Most Serious of Three that mostly occurs on legs and feet Goes deep into Dermis Start with painful blisters that later form deep ulcers. A yellow thick crust covers the area.

6 Layers of Skin Bullous Impetigo will cause separation between the epidermis and the dermis Ecthyma goes deeper into the dermis

7 Symptoms Red sores that quickly rupture, ooze for a few days and then form a yellowish-brown crust Itching Painless blisters Painful fluid or pus filled sores

8 Cause By the two organisms, staphlococcus and streplococcus bacteria that gets into the an open in the skin. Staph bacteria produce a toxin that causes impetigo to spread around the skin. You can get this by contact with other people who have the infection.

9 Worst Case Scenario Impetigo is rarely a serious condition, but it can sometimes lead to problems such as.. Poststreptococcal Glomerulonephrities (PSGN) – cause of kidney inflammation which may lead to kidney failure Cellulitis - serious infection that affects the tissues under your skin and will spread to your lymph nodes and into the bloodstream. This can quickly become life- threatening if not treated right. Methicillin- resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) infection may cause pneumonia and blood infections.

11 Treatment If you may have these problems, you must..
Clean sores and/or bites with a antibacterial soap Apply antibiotic ointment and wash hands afterward For more medical attention by a physician take medication such as penicillin or cephalosporins

12 3 Facts Anyone can get impetigo but the disease is more common between young children that have cuts This is contagious and it’s important to not come in contact with people who have it When shaving be careful shave around the sores because otherwise the infection will spread
