4 Realistic Work Environment (RWE) modules initially created in Publishing, Audio Film and Media, Museums and Exhibition and Drama (later became Events).

6 Insight into Publishing Museums and Exhibition Managing an Art House Cinema Managing an Event Food Writing for Television

7 The module aims:   To familiarise the student with all aspects of the management of an Art House cinema.   To give the student practical experience of managing an Art House cinema, and of support roles involved in the running of the cinema.   To raise student awareness of the implications of the cinema’s role within the community it serves and within the wider field of cinema provision, and offer practical engagement with programme planning.   To provide training for, and to involve the student in, the process of job application in the field of cinema management.

8 LEARNING OUTCOMES On successful completion of this module students will be able to: 1. 1.Understand the role that programming and financing play in the development of the cinema and the service it provides for its various user groups. 2. 2.Plan a film event and be aware of the implications of that event in terms of cost, programming, audience, and legal requirements.

9 3. 3.Manage the daily running of the cinema to a professional standard and be aware of the legislative environment in which the cinema operates. 4. 4.Reflect upon tasks undertaken, and understand their value in terms of personal development. 5. 5.Identify career opportunities in the field of cinema management, and programming, and of the procedures involved in job applications.

10 Assessment 1. 1.Project Planning and a pitch. 40% – –Project report and 10 min pitch 2. 2.Cinema management skills. 20% – –Logged practical experience in the cinema. 3. 3.Written test. 10% 4. 4.Reflective Log. 20% 5. 5.Job application. 20% – –Application documents and job interview

13 The activities students are involved with put them in touch with organizations and institutions.

14 – –Corner house Cinema, Manchester, – –Preston City Council Cultural Developments, – –North West Vision and Media

15 Because the students are involved in an operational facility, they become involved with such institutions and agencies.

16 By virtue of the activities the students are involved in on the module, they have the language with which to speak to industry people.

17 An alternative to Lecture / seminar format teaching and 60 / 40 essay assessment.
