Army Total Asset Visibility with Enhanced RFID Tracking November 15, 2010 Recorded Demonstration

System Overview Server – Stores data, allows remote retrieval Ruggedized iPhone – In-the field tracking Asset – Barcode for manual logging of information – Zigbee for automated location logging and monitoring of asset (humidity, tilt, unauthorized movement) Network – Connect reader to server – Connect remote stations to server Status: Currently under development IP-Cloud Online, remote tracking Data Storage In-the-field tracking Asset Zigbee RFID for logging location automatically, ensuring proper storage… Bar code for manual location logging

Value-added of MIS/2000 iPhone Tracking Solution ATAV Objective: – Maintain asset visibility as it moves around the world Track who handled asset Where it will be next Manage asset status – Find asset on site Integrated communications for anywhere connectivity – In-the field visibility of asset location COTS – Cheap, easily replaced – Leverage existing map & GPS capabilities – Familiar intuitive interface for untrained users Extensible solution to incorporate later applications Support multiple servers / data formats with a common reader Improvements with Zigbee add-on – Auto-monitor health of asset with extensible sensors – Auto-locate even between manual check-ins Plug in HW to extend connectivity to: SRW, ZigBee… User location Desired Asset

CR + iPhone (MIS/2000) COTS for coordinating disaster response with non first-responders (SAHANA) Communicate over civilian infrastructure when available, set up TVWS network when not available In same vein as Mitola / Fette “Radar O’Reilly on your phone” Other apps: – Logistics management w/ interface to Zigbee – Maintenance and Intel apps More info: – Bob Wiebe: bwiebe@geltd.netbwiebe@geltd.net Plug in HW supports ad-hoc TVWS network 4

Envisioned System Components GameKit APIs Secondary Network Layer Our Layer (HW) Our App Zigbee Asset App WWAN / WLAN MapKit Voice / Video / Picture IP Backbone Config Discovery ZigbeeHF Asset RFID Asset Reader (iPhone) RFID Server HF IP Gateway Zigbee Tier 1

Conceptual Prototype Featured capabilities – Report location – Detect, report movement – Store asset information both locally and at server – Capture, store, retrieve pictures of assets? Want to be able to pull up a picture of what the asset looked like when originally scanned – Remotely monitor IP Backbone GameKit APIs Built-in Bluetooth Our App WWAN / WLAN MapKit Voice / Video / Picture Config Discovery Asset Reader (iPhone) GameKit APIs Built-in Bluetooth Our App Asset RFID Mockup

Functional Prototype Adds Zigbee devices as RFID Breadboarded HW module Scalable real-time sensor monitoring IP Backbone GameKit APIs Our App WWAN / WLAN MapKit Voice / Video / Picture Config Discovery Asset Reader (iPhone) Custom Zigbee Sublayer

User Login Controls access to reader Different levels of access given to different user classes User data stored on server

Main View Five primary menus – User Information – Asset location, movement history – General asset management – Management of local assets – Warnings of critical events Manage user login, wireless connections View location of assets Movement history (Default view) Manage assets not immediately accessible (search…) Local asset management Asset warnings that need immediate user attention Wireless Network Availability

Alerts Events that need immediate user attention – Generally from sensor information Examples – Pallet is tilting beyond bounds – Excess temperature – Unauthorized movement Alerts from RFIDs in area

Server Role: – Master data repository for asset information – Support searches / queries for assets from reader – Merge routine written for later integration with ATAV – Authenticate users / roles Design notes: – MySQL for DBMS same as internal database in iPhone Native support for OpenGIS (geographic info) – Supports web access of information Allows easy access for apps developed by 3 rd parties – JSON used for data transfer Like XML, but more compact – Local and remote access to server Database Design

Individual Asset View / Management Fetches information from server and RFID to ensure harmonized Extensible fields User editable Select from Set of assets either from list returned from search or from RFIDs in area

Online Maintenance Help Each asset has a field that provides a URL for maintenance / help information on that asset – Possibly a NULL field Double-clicking URL spawns iPhone Browser to start help located at URL – Envisioned as webpage with step-by-step descriptions of how to repair / maintain asset – Possible tie-in to maintenance history

Map Views Allows viewing of own location and desired asset View lists of assets from: – Search results – RFIDs in the area View movement history of single device User location Related Asset

Edit Interface Allows the field user to update information about the asset – Update descriptions Dunnage info – Update photo Note damage…

Asset Manager View Provides mechanism for manually creating / deleting / combining assets in the field Accessibility limited by user permissions

Device Configuration View Provides a means to configure user options and allowable wireless links

Project Status Conceptual Prototype – Operational server, reader, conceptual RFID (iPhone) – To be demonstrated in Hawthorne in December to refine operation Functional Prototype – Development to begin in December – Interface with ZigBee developer’s kit – Scalable sensors More information: – Bob Wiebe bob.wiebe@geltd.net bob.wiebe@geltd.net NEXT: Functional Prototype
