Reading Comprehension Rubric, Session 2 MSQI-Reciprocal Reading Sarah Benis Scheier-Dolberg AUSSIE Consultant

Warm Up Predicting * Questioning * Clarifying Summarizing * Thinking Aloud Which strategy will you focus on teaching over the next 3-4 weeks? Do you think that with an intensive focus on instruction of this strategy that students will progress along the reciprocal reading rubric?

Session Objectives Familiarize ourselves with the Reciprocal Reading (Reading Comprehension) Rubric Engage in inquiry cycle: looking at data and planning for instruction

Access Our Materials Online www.sarahbsd.wordpress/pdresources/x144 Today’s Materials Reciprocal Reading Rubric Data Session Handouts

Looking at Data Last week we chose one class to focus on for our introductory work with the reciprocal rubric. Using the data you have (blank rubric filled in for one class and/or student self-assessments) discuss what you see in the data with those sitting at your table. Give each person 1-2 minutes to discuss before moving onto the next person in the group. Each person should discuss: –What strategy (or strategies) s/he chose to focus on for assessing reading comprehension with the rubric; –What patterns they see in the data (How many 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s? Any surprises? Any differences in scores within rubric sub-categories?) The next step will be to commit to teaching and assessing one reading comprehension strategy for the next 3-4 weeks with the goal of re- assessing with a short performance task in the beginning of June.

Regroup According to Chosen Strategy

Planning for Instruction Gather in small groups with other teachers planning to teach and reassess the same reading comprehension strategy. Looking at Levels 3 & 4 on the rubric, discuss ideas for how to plan instruction in the coming weeks to help your students further develop their use of your chosen reading comprehension strategy. Consider your students scoring at Level 1. What will those individual students need to successfully move to a Level 2 or 3? Please record your group’s ideas on chart paper and be ready to share your ideas with the group before we close.
