Multiplication & Division Ms. Hyder

Multiplication & Division Students will understand the properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division.

Welcome to Math Class!!!

Multiplication The basic idea of multiplication is repeated addition. For example: 5 × 3 = 5 + 5 + 5 = 15

Multiplication Table Shows you the results of multiplying two numbers. One number is along a row, the other is down a column, and the results are shown where a row and column meet. Example: 8 multiplied by 4 is 32

Multiplication Vocabulary Factor: A number used as a multiplier in a product. Multiplier: One of two or more numbers combined by multiplication to form a product. Product: The result of multiplying two or more numbers.

Division Division is splitting into equal parts or groups. It is the result of "fair sharing". Example: there are 12 chocolates, and 3 friends want to share them, how do they divide the chocolates? Answer: They should get 4 each. We use the ÷ symbol, or sometimes the / symbol to mean divide: 12 / 3 = 4 12 ÷ 3 = 4

Long Division A special way of doing division that is quick to do (once you know how) without the use of a calculator.

Multiplication & Division Multiplication CLUE WORDS TIMES PRODUCT OF MULTIPLIED BY BY (dimension) DIVISION CLUE WORDS QUOTIENT OF DIVIDED BY HALF [or a fraction] SPLIT SEPARATED CUT UP PARTS SHARED EQUALLY

How does Multiplication Relate to Addition If you add 4+4+4+4+4+4+4 it equals 28. That is the same as if you we multiplying 7x4.

How does Division Relate to Subtraction If we are separating 25 objects into 5 equal groups of 5, we would subtract 5 objects at a time from the large group and place them in 5 equal groups. It would look like this: 25-5-5-5-5- 5.

Multiplication Activity A game my students can play to practice multiplication is BINGO. Each student chooses any of the 25 numbers at the bottom of the BINGO card and write one in each square. Remove all of the zero flash cards except one. Randomly draw a flash card, and read the problem aloud. Each student with the answer on their BINGO card marks the square. Continue until someone obtains a BINGO.

Division Activity I will bring in a large bag of candy, like M&M's. Let the students count the number of pieces in the bag. Have them figure out how many pieces their classmates should get so everyone has a fair share. Let them answer the question and then they can eat the candy afterwards.

Grading Grades are based on the increase of points. Points are based on:  Class participation (effort)  Completion of assignments  Group participation  Group activity, test, and self-reflection Grades will be posted online and updated every Thursday. Our Grading Scale 90-100% = A 80-89% = B 70-79% = C 60-69% = D Below 60% = F Grades are calculated on cumulative percentage and are rounded up whenever possible.
