2 Quote #1 “War means fighting, and fighting means killing.” -Nathan Bedford Forrest Nathan Bedford Forrest, one of the most polarizing figures of the Civil War era, was born July 13 th, 1821 in Chapel Hill Tennessee-a small town on the Duck River. When his father, a blacksmith, died when he was 16, Forrest moved to the Memphis Delta and eventually became a successful business man- indeed a millionaire- dealing in cotton, land, and slaves. Now you know a bit about Nathan! I think that what Nathan is trying to say is that war is wrong. He points it out by saying how fighting means killing. During this time period this quote is significant because it shows how much people dreaded the war……….. I would, too! This quote is showing that not only the Civil War is wrong, but so is any war.

3 Quote #2 “ The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battle-field, and patriots grave, to every living heart and hearth-stone, all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.” -Abraham Lincoln I think that what Abraham Lincoln is trying to say is that when a soldier dies in battle or war, we must remember and let our best self (angel in our nature) unite us. Memory plays an important role in all of this. I think Abraham Lincoln, just like Nathan, was trying to say that war and violence affects not only the person, but also the ones who loved him.

4 Quote #3 “She couldn’t survey the wreck of the world with an air of casual unconcern.” -Margaret Mitchell Margaret Mitchell was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on November 8 th 1900. As a child, she was fascinated by the Civil War stories she heard from Confederate veterans. The imaginative girl wrote, produced, and directed plays, casting her friends, and invited the neighborhood to the porch performances. I think that what Margaret is trying to say that the Civil War was so bloody and horrible that she couldn’t just go about her daily life pretending that it wasn’t a big deal. She shows this by using the description “the wreck of the world”, which sort of describes how she and many others must of felt.

5 Quote #4 “ The power of noble deeds is to be preserved and passed on to the future.” -Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain is best known for his heroic participation in the Battle of Gettysburg. Chamberlain and his regiment, the 20 th Maine Infantry, became famous for their desperate bayonet charge down Little Round Top on the second day of the battle. I think that what Joshua is trying to say is that if everyone is noble to one another (meaning that you do something for the good of others even if it means harm to you), and we pass it along for many generations, the world would be a better place because everybody cares for one another. I really agree with him.

7 Quote #5 “ It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us-that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave the last full measure of devotion- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth.” -Abraham Lincoln What I think that President Lincoln is trying to say is that the people that have died in the war should not have died for no reason. They have risked their own lives for their cause or belief, and we should make sure we don’t loose what they thought for. This is very significant, especially during this time period, because it shows how honored these soldiers died, and they have died for us. He points this out when he says “ …that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain…”. Wow! He words this speech so well!!!

8 Quote #6 “Every man is said to have his peculiar ambition. Whether it be true or not, I can say for one that I have no other so great as that of being truly esteemed of my fellow men, by rendering myself worthy of their esteem. How far I shall succeed in gratifying this ambition, is yet to be developed.” -Abraham Lincoln I think that what Abraham Lincoln is trying to say is that what he wanted most was to be respected and admired by doing things that gained him that like leading by example. The significance of this quote during this time period is that everybody matters, no matter how big or how small in the way that we lead our lives.

9 Quote #7 “ Let us then turn this government back into the channel in which the framers of the Constitution originally placed it.” -Abraham Lincoln I think that what Abraham Lincoln is trying to say is the government was off track and not doing what it was set up to do by the people who wrote the Constitution. This is very significant, especially in that time period because it shows how badly Abraham Lincoln wanted everybody to become one, and follow the amendments, which not everybody was doing. I totally agree with him!

10 Quote #8 “Some people tried to hurt us to protect themselves, their families and communities… This was one of the consequences of the Civil War. People stopped trusting each other, and every stranger became an enemy. Even people who knew you became extremely careful about how they related or spoke to you.” -Ishmael Beah At the age of 12, in the Civil War in Sierra Leone (Africa; 1991- 2002)he fled attacking rebels and wandered a land unrecognizable by violence. By 13, he had been picked up a government army made him a child soldier, and Beah, at heart a gentle boy, found that he was capable of truly terrible acts. Eventually released by the army and sent to UNICEF rehabilitation center, he struggled to regain his humanity and to reenter the world of civilians, who viewed him with fear and suspicion.

11 Continuing Quote #8 I think what Ishmael Beah is saying in this quote is basically describing what it was like while the Civil War was going on. He tells you how everybody became suspicious of everybody, and nobody knew who was friend and who was foe. How he says this really makes you understand how so many people were affected by this war. He too is saying how war is horrible and cruel.
