2.  A mouse is a handheld pointing device that lets you select and move items on your screen. A mouse can come in various shape, color and sizes.

3.  Resting your hand on the mouse, use the thumb and two rightmost fingers to move the mouse on the desk. Use your two remaining fingers to press the mouse buttons. When you move the on the desk the pointer on the screen move in the same direction. The pointer assumes different shapes depending on its location on the screen and the task you are performing.

4.  A mouse pad provides a smooth surface for moving a mouse and reduces the amount of dirt that enters the mouse. You can buy mouse pads displaying interesting designs or pictures at most computer stores. Some mouse pads have built in wrist support for increased comfort.

5.  Click:  A click oftens selects an item on the screen. To click, press and release the left mouse button.

6.  A right click often displays a list of commands on the screen. To right click, press and release the right mouse button.

7.  A double click often opens a document or starts a program. To double click, quickly press and release the left mouse button twice.

8.  Dragging and dropping makes it easy to move an item on the screen. Position the pointer over an item on the screen and then press and hold down the left mouse button. Still holding down the button, move the pointer to where you want to place the item and then release the button.

9.  If you are left handed, you can switch the functions of the left and the right mouse buttons to make the mouse easier to use. For example, to click an item, you would press the right button instead of the left.

10.  There are several advanced mouse types available that offer useful features.

11.  A wheeled mouse has a wheel between the left and right mouse buttons. You can often use this wheel to scroll through information or zoom in and out. The Microsoft Intellimouse is a popular example of a wheeled mouse.

12.  You can purchase a mouse that has buttons you can program to perform specific tasks, such as double clicking an item. A three button mouse is an example of a programmable mouse.

13.  A wireless, or a cordless, mouse runs on a battery and reduces the clutter on your desk by eliminating the mouse cord. When you move the mouse on your desk, the mouse sends signals to your computer, the same way a remote control send signals to a television.

14.  An optical sensor mouse detects mouse movement using an optical sensor rather than a ball inside a mouse. This type of mouse does not contain any moving parts that can wear out or stick. A mouse pad is not required when using an optical sensor mouse.
