Energy Transformations November 5, 2012 Ms. Smith Mrs. Malone DO NOW: Date: November 5, 2012 6.9C demonstrate energy transformations such as how energy in a flashlight battery changes from chemical energy to electrical energy to light energy. 1.Pick up a new yellow gold Do Now sheet 2.Put your CB on your desk 3.Tape in Week 11 Vocabulary on Pg. ____ in your CB 4.Copy down this week’s TEKS 5.Read the Do Now Reading 5. Q?: The battery is an example of what type of energy?

Energy Transformations November 6, 2012 Ms. Smith Mrs. Malone DO NOW: Date: November 6, 2012 1.Put your CB on your desk 2.Read the Do Now Reading Q?: In paragraph 4, what does converted mean? 6.9C demonstrate energy transformations such as how energy in a flashlight battery changes from chemical energy to electrical energy to light energy.

Introduction to Energy Transformations Read the first paragraph on pg. 51 of Gateways to Science Grade 6. Look at the example below, tracing back a car’s energy: Make your own diagram tracing back the energy in a toaster as far as you can go. The car’s moving energy comes from burning fuel. Fuel’s chemical energy comes from decomposed micro- organisms that lived in the sea The tiny animals get their energy from plants, which get their energy from the sun. The sun gets its energy from the atoms inside it. The sun is the source of almost all the energy on earth.

Energy Transformations November 7-8, 2012 Ms. Smith Mrs. Malone DO NOW: Date: November 7– 8, 2012 6.9C demonstrate energy transformations such as how energy in a flashlight battery changes from chemical energy to electrical energy to light energy. 1.Put your CB on your desk 2.Read the Do Now Reading Q?: All of the following are involved in the energy transformations within a flashlight EXCEPT — A electrical energy. B light energy. C chemical energy. D solar energy.

Group Member Roles November 7-8, 2012 Ms. Smith Mrs. Malone : Yellow- Materials Manager Only person allowed out of seat during lab Obtains and returns all lab materials Blue - Safety/Clean-up Manager Enforces all safety rules Green - Activity Director Reads directions to the group Keeps group on-task Red - Data Manager Records all data Ensures all group members have lab data

Name that energy form! STATION 1STATION 2 STATION 3STATION 4 -The ball is less dense than the water, so the water pushes the ball back to the surface. -The electrons in the magnet are attracted to the iron in the paperclip. -This attractions pulls the paperclip to the magnet. - Striking the tuning fork causes air molecules to bounce between the two forks. This creates sound and moves the ping pong ball. -The dish soap causes the fat in the milk to break down and move away from the other fat particles. -The food coloring lets us see the movement caused by the reaction between the soap and the fat.

Energy Transformation Stations STATION 1STATION 2 STATION 3STATION 4 Your hand transferred moving or mechanical energy to the ping pong ball. Mechanical to Mechanical -The magnet pulls the paperclip towards it, using electromagnetic energy to move the paperclip (which becomes mechanical energy). Electromagnet to Mechanical -Sound is a form of mechanical energy because it is produced by moving air particles. Mechanical to Sound -The dish soap broke down the bonds in the milk, causing it to move. Chemical to Mechanical

Energy Transformations November 9, 2012 Ms. Smith Mrs. Malone DO NOW: Date: November 9, 2012 6.9C demonstrate energy transformations such as how energy in a flashlight battery changes from chemical energy to electrical energy to light energy. 1.Put your CB on your desk 2.Read the Do Now Reading 3.Put your HW on your desk 3. Q?: According to the Law of Conservation of Energy, ideally, the chemical energy provided by the battery —

Energy Transformations November 9, 2012 Ms. Smith Mrs. Malone Top Ten Assignment 1.Pick an assignment from the front cover of your CB 2.Complete this assignment on Pg. ____ 3.Topic: Energy Transformations
