To make a connection between Congruent Triangles and Similar Triangles, we must review RATIOS. A RATIO is a comparison of two or more quantities measured in the same units.

RATIOS can be written three (3) different ways: 1) 32 to 402) 32 : 403) 32 40 32 to 40 1 st Term 2 nd term 16 : 27 : 35 1 st Term 2 nd term 3 rd term

Order of a ratio matters…. 1) What is the ratio for Team A for their wins, losses and ties? TeamWLTA1061 B1292 C951 Wins : Losses : Ties 10 : 6: 1 2) What is the ratio of games won for Team B compared to the total games played by Team B? Wins : Games Played 12 : 23

Order of a ratio matters…. Ratios can be placed in simplest form by dividing by the greatest common factor. (GCF) Ratios can also be placed in equivalent form to compare them. 32 40 ÷ 8 = 4545 Team A Team B W L W L 10 6 12 9 = = 90 54 72 54 Team A has the best ratio of wins to losses.

Write a two-term ratio to compare the number of ties for Boston and for Buffalo NHL Standings TeamWLT Boston49256 Buffalo48257 Quebec422810 Montreal32408 Hartland284210 SOLUTION: SOLUTION: Boston Ties : Buffalo Ties 6 : 7 6 : 7

Write the three-term ratio of wins to losses to ties for Quebec in simplest form. NHL Standings TeamWLT Boston49256 Buffalo48257 Quebec422810 Montreal32408 Hartland284210

Write the three-term ratio of wins to losses to ties for Quebec in simplest form. NHL Standings TeamWLT Boston49256 Buffalo48257 Quebec422810 Montreal32408 Hartland284210 SOLUTION: SOLUTION: Wins : Losses : Ties Wins : Losses : Ties 42 : 28 : 10 42 : 28 : 10 21 : 14 : 5 ( ) 21 : 14 : 5 ( ) ÷ 2

Write the three-term ratio of wins to losses to ties for Montreal in simplest form. NHL Standings TeamWLT Boston49256 Buffalo48257 Quebec422810 Montreal32408 Hartland284210

Write the three-term ratio of wins to losses to ties for Montreal in simplest form. NHL Standings TeamWLT Boston49256 Buffalo48257 Quebec422810 Montreal32408 Hartland284210 SOLUTION: SOLUTION: Wins : Losses : Ties Wins : Losses : Ties 32 : 40 : 8 32 : 40 : 8 4 : 5 : 1 ( ) 4 : 5 : 1 ( ) ÷ 8

Find the greatest ratio by finding a common denominator. 4 : 95 : 62 : 3 8 : 1815 : 1812 : 18 The common denominator is 18 because that is where the second terms meet for the first time. You multiply the first ratio by 2, the second ratio by 3 and the third ratio by 6.

Find the greatest ratio by finding a common denominator. 10 to 84 to 37 to 6

Find the greatest ratio by finding a common denominator. 10 to 84 to 37 to 6 60 : 4864 : 4856 : 48 The common denominator is 48 because that is where the second terms meet for the first time. You multiply the first ratio by 6, the second ratio by 16 and the third ratio by 8.
