8 Water Industry Data Management Current Solutions – LIMS & SCADA
LIMS & SCADA are the most common Data Management systems in the Water industry Each is designed to manage different aspects of the operation Neither can easily provide the overall view of the Water operation First created for pharmaceutical industry Used by Labs, not generally tied to data outside the Lab Used to organize and analyze data from a wide number of lab data sources Reports can be highly customized Designed for process control & data acquisition Controls processes & provides excellent overview of data acquired from the processes Not designed to acquire and track data that is not part of the process (ex. Lab or Field data) Requires programming to create reports Plus – not all facilities need or can afford either solution

9 Water Industry Data Management Current Solutions - Excel
LIMS Excel SCADA First created for pharmaceutical industry Used by Labs, not generally tied to data outside the Lab Used to organize and analyze data from a wide number of lab data sources Reports can be highly customized Commonly available software program Easy to manually enter data from different sources (lab, field, & sometimes SCADA) Easy for standard formats that can be shared with others Can graph data without separate programming Designed for process control & data acquisition Controls processes & provides excellent overview of data acquired from the processes Not designed to acquire and track data that is not part of the process (ex. Lab or Field data) Requires programming to create reports Many facilities try to fill data management gaps with Excel, but this has issues too…

10 Why Excel is not Good Enough Some things to consider
It’s easy to overwrite cells in Excel: How are you protecting your data and formulas to prevent an accidental change? Do you have any audit trails on the data to indicate when and why a cell had been changed? Excel has limitations on the amount of data it can hold: Do you have different files for your current and historical data? Excel can import data but requires advanced programming to format it: How is your data added to your Excel file and how long does it take? If the data being imported needed to change, who will be able to make the change? Manipulating and reorganizing data once it is loaded into Excel can be difficult: How long does it take to pull together your data when you need a non-standard report? Are you able to get all the value from your data because it’s too difficult to further analyze? How often do you want to look at the same data in different ways (e.g. different time frames, different comparisons)? Excel does not automatically back up data or provide version control: What would happen if someone accidently deleted your file? How do you assure revision control? Most everyone uses Excel in some way to generate reports and to manipulate data. These are some questions to consider when determining what kind of data management system you need. It basic difference is that Excel is a great tool for when you are doing a one-time analysis. There isn't a faster tool for building a simple snapshot that you might not use again. However, when you are dealing with a large data set that needs to be securely stored, easily accessed and easy to maintain a database based solution is the best implementation How do you make sure that you have and are using accurate information? How do you manage changes to the file or files? How much effort is needed to do a non-standard analysis or report? 10

52 Case Studies 52

53 Case 1: Improving Aeration Efficiency
Oxygen transfer efficiency is a function of bubble size. The smaller the bubble, the higher the efficiency. Ceramic or membrane diffusers will foul in time, causing the bubble size to increase. To minimize energy used and reduce downtime, it is important to determine when diffusers need to be cleaned. Clients use WIMS™ to determine cleaning cycle by benchmarking pounds of BOD removed per KW of electricity used. 53

54 Case 2: Lowering Chemical Costs
In the chart of raw and settled water turbidity against alum dosage (obtained by using graphing tools in WIMS™), the client recognized that increased alum dosing (circled) did not improve settled water turbidity. This led to an opportunity to save up to 10 percent in alum dosage. 54

55 Case 3: Real-time estimation of BOD
The time-lag in obtaining BOD results, a 5-day lab test, make it challenging for plant operations to adjust treatment processes to adverse levels of BOD. By using powerful statistical tools built into WIMS™, a site-specific correlation between on-line UV absorbance against lab BOD measurements was obtained. The client can now estimate BOD in real-time, allowing for the optimization for treatment processes and avoid potential violations. 55
