8 Trip Rationale Relevance – As a Christian school committed to teaching from a Christian perspective, we are thrilled to be proposing to take students to see Italy, the historical setting of the birth of the church in the West, from the catacombs and the Coliseum in Rome, to the great spiritual revival of the Middle Ages in Assisi, to the birthplace of the Renaissance in Florence and the wealth of artistic expression there and in Rome. This tour will focus on the history of our faith as expressed through art. We intend for the trip to be more of a spiritual pilgrimage rather than a typical site seeing tour.

10 Tour Rationale: Curriculum – Senior Art, AP Art, Comparative Civilizations 12, Social Studies 8, Biblical Perspectives modules Christianity in the Arts, Spirituality through art, Grasping for the Wind linkages Learning goals – an increased awareness of the depth of spirituality available in the 2000 years of Christian history in the West. An appreciation of the tremendous accomplishments of Western Christian culture in art by seeing the art and architecture first hand, up close and personal, an experience that no textbook, no lecture, no documentary, no image can compare to. To see first hand the historically significant and pivotal art pieces in World History: painting, sculpture, mosaic, architecture

11 Learn how traditional art forms were and are created and restored, eg Fresco Work shop. What it was like to live in different time periods for different classes of people. Patronage – understand the concept of Palazzo Vechio, Florence

13 Culture and the Arts - analyse how the arts express civilizations’ cultural elements, including belief systems social organization language power and authority order and harmony archetypes Assisi

15 Culture and Values evaluate the components of value systems within and among cultures, including religion and mythology morals and ethics heroes and role models philosophical viewpoints analyse the diverse values and beliefs of civilizations

16 Visual Arts 11 and 12 PLO’s An education in visual arts fosters visual literacy skills that contribute to students’ development as educated citizens. Visual art is an essential form of communication, indispensable to freedom of inquiry and expression.
