What is Spellathon? A sponsored spelling challenge for our school. We will learn new spellings and ask our family and friends to sponsor us for every word we spell correctly on the day of our Spellathon. We will raise money for the charity Mencap.
What is Mencap? Mencap is a charity for people with a learning disability. Someone with a learning disability can find it hard to learn, communicate or do everyday things like make a cup of tea. People with a learning disability will have a learning disability for their whole lives.
Matt and Sam Matt and Sam are great friends and play basketball together. Matt has a learning disability. He cannot speak so communicates with Sam through using different signs. Sometimes Matt is bullied by other people who do not understand his learning disability.
How does Mencap help Matt? By organising sports activities for him to take part in with other children his own age. By helping Matt to go to the school that is right for him. By telling people to stop bullying. By helping Matt to find a place to live and a job when he grows up.
How the money our school raises will be used by Mencap £10 could pay to make a special picture book for someone with a learning disability to help them communicate. £50 could fund a training session for someone with a learning disability to learn how to use the bus on their own. £250 could pay for 8 people with a learning disability to have visit from someone from Mencap to teach them skills to help them live on their own, for example making lunch or doing the washing up.
