1 Common Core Standards for Social Studies Kindergarten – Grade 5 Incorporating Social Studies Content through Literacy Greece Central School District - Office of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment

2 What are the Common Core Standards? The goal of the CCSS is the prepare students to be college and career ready. These standards are research based, align with college and career expectations, are rigorous, and meet international standards. There are four major strands that span K-12 education: –Reading –Writing –Speaking and Listening –Language Development

3 A Focus on Humanities In social studies classrooms, the essence of the Common Core State Standards is a focus in humanities – connecting social studies skills and content with English/Language Arts curriculum. For our social studies lessons, units and classrooms, the reading and writing strands are central to instruction and student learning. Information contained here will focus on the standards for reading and writing, in grades K-5 for social studies.

4 Literacy in Social Studies - Reading There are four standards for the Common Core Reading strand: Key Ideas and Details: Read the text closely to make inferences, determine themes, describe characters, and how ideas develop in a text. Craft and Structure: Analyze the structure of texts, paragraphs and sentences; assess point of view. Integration of Knowledge and Ideas: Integrate and evaluate content visually and quantitatively; evaluate claims in a text; compare how different texts address similar themes. Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity: A progression of complexity in text and theme in order to build independence and proficiency.

5 CCSS: Reading in Kindergarten Key Ideas: –Students identify characters and events in text with teacher prompting and support. Craft and Structure: –Understand what authors do. –Recognize different types of text (stories vs. poems) Integration of Knowledge: –Compare experiences of different characters in the same text. Range of Complexity: –Group reading activities; read aloud.

6 CCSS: Reading in Grade 1 Key Ideas: –Students answer questions about details, events and describe the setting in a text. Craft and Structure: –Identification of “senses” words or phrases (hear, smell, see, etc.) –Can begin to answer: Who is the storyteller? Integration of Knowledge: –Use of illustrations and visuals to describe a story. Range of Complexity: –Group reading activities and introduction of poetry.

7 CCSS: Reading in Grade 2 Key Ideas: –Students answer questions about the who, what, when, where and why of a text. –Students can identify the message or moral of a story. Craft and Structure: –Ability to describe the structure of a story (intro, climax, conclusion). –Modeling of different voices for different characters when reading aloud to illustrate point of view. Integration of Knowledge: –Compare two or more versions of the same story. Range of Complexity: –Read and comprehend literature, including poetry at the grade 2-3 band complexity.

8 CCSS: Reading in Grade 3 Key Ideas: –Refer directly to the text when answering questions. –Determine central messages in cultural reads. Craft and Structure: –Understand chapter, scene, stanza, etc. –Distinguish narrative point of view from others in a text. Integration of Knowledge: –Compare and contrast stories or poems by the same author. Range of Complexity: –Same as grade level 2, selecting appropriately leveled texts.

9 CCSS: Reading in Grade 4 Key Ideas: –Draw inferences from text. –Determine theme. Craft and Structure: –Students can explain the differences in structure for poems, drama, and prose. Integration of Knowledge: –Connection text of a story to a visual of the same story. –Contrast similar themes and topics from different cultures. Range of Complexity: –Read and comprehend text from the grade 4-5 band complexity.

10 CCSS: Reading in Grade 5 Key Ideas: –Accurately quote from text in answers. –Summarize a text, poem, story, etc. Craft and Structure: –Students can begin to identify figurative language, including similes and metaphors. –Explain how characters, stanzas, or chapters “fit together.” Integration of Knowledge: –Compare stories in the same genre. Range of Complexity: –Read and comprehend text from the grade 4-5 band complexity.

11 Literacy in Social Studies - Writing There are four standards for the Common Core Writing strand: Text Types and Purposes: Student develop skills to write arguments, informative texts, and narratives. Production and Distribution of Writing: Production of writing pieces, including revision, editing and publication and the use of technology. Research to Build and Present Knowledge: Students conduct both short-term and long-term research, gather information, and draw evidence from texts. Range of Writing: Students learn to write for different audiences, purposes and tasks.

12 CCSS: Writing in Kindergarten Text Types and Purposes: –Combination of drawing and writing to state opinions (Ex. My favorite book is…) Production and Distribution of Writing: –Respond to teacher led questioning. Research to Build and Present Knowledge: –Shared research and writing. For example, creating an opinion about a favorite book or author. Range of Writing: –Begins in grade 4.

13 CCSS: Writing in Grade 1 Text Types and Purposes: –Students write opinion pieces about a text or author, with reasons for the opinion. Production and Distribution of Writing: –Ability to write narratives about events. Research to Build and Present Knowledge: –Create “How To…” books for others, including friends and parents. Range of Writing: –Begins in grade 4.

14 CCSS: Writing in Grade 2 Text Types and Purposes: –Use of linkage words in writing (because, also, and). Production and Distribution of Writing: –Written narratives with action, thought and feelings. –Students begin to revise and edit during the writing process. Research to Build and Present Knowledge: –Produce a report or create a story using multiple books. –Record observations in sequence. Create a written timeline. Range of Writing: –Begins in grade 4.

15 CCSS: Writing in Grade 3 Text Types and Purposes: –Students develop and write opinions with point of view. –Informational or Explanatory writing. Create a set of directions. –Narratives of real or imagined events. Production and Distribution of Writing: –Students plan, write, revise and edit a piece, including use of technology. Research to Build and Present Knowledge: –Note taking skills. Student learn to take notes from a text. Range of Writing: –Practice both extended and short-term writing time frames.

16 CCSS: Writing in Grade 4 Text Types and Purposes: –Students develop and write opinions with point of view, using examples from a text. –Writing incorporates domain specific language and vocabulary. Production and Distribution of Writing: –Students use technology, including the internet, to write and publish work. Research to Build and Present Knowledge: –Students investigate topics through text (how an author uses evidence…) Range of Writing: –Practice both extended and short-term writing time frames. –Students begin to learn to write to difference audiences.

17 CCSS: Writing in Grade 5 Text Types and Purposes: –The writing process expands to connect ideas, themes, setting and characters using phrases such as “consequently, in addition, etc.” –Students write using dialogue. Production and Distribution of Writing: –Students publish writing through interaction with text, technology and peers. Research to Build and Present Knowledge: –Students complete research using two or more texts. For example, students compare characters or setting from two different texts. Range of Writing: –Practice both extended and short-term writing time frames. –Students begin to learn to write to difference audiences.
