1.  Reading fluency is the ability to read quickly and easily.  A simple way to know if your child is reading fluently is to listen to him/her read grade level text aloud. Fluency

2. Fluency Checklist: ACCURACY: I read the words correctly RATE: I read not too fast and not too slow EXPRESSION: I read with feeling and I didn’t sound like a robot PUNCTUATION: I follow most or all of the punctuation marks as I read the text

3.  Model fluent reading! Focus on expression, character voices, and punctuation.  Help your child choose books at his/her independent reading level. Use the 5-finger rule as a guide.  Repeated reading is the best strategy! Read the story first and then have your child re-read the same text at least 3 more times. How can I help my child read fluently?

4. Have your child listen to a taped recording of a book. Encourage your child to point to the words on the page to strengthen word recognition skills. When coming to an unknown word give your child 5 seconds. If you have to provide the word be sure to have him/her repeat the word while pointing to the word in text. 6. Fluency Reminders Practice these skills at least 15 minutes per day to improve fluency! Fluency provides the bridge between word recognition and comprehension.
