Single-point Diamond Turning (SPDT) is a machining process making use of a single crystal diamond cutting tool which possesses nanometric edge sharpness, excellent form reproducibility and wear resistance. The usual depth of cut in SPDT is in the order of a micrometer of less.

14 14 There is no NC programming software that is available to take the freeform optical design and can directly output a useable NC program for ultra-precision freeform machining. Difficult to accurate represent of the freeform surfaces with micrometer to sub-micrometer level of form accuracy. This is particular true when fitting a surface based on a cloud of points.
