2 Introducing Illinois The State Capital is Springfield.The State Nickname is “The Prairie State.” The State Bird is The Cardinal.The State Flower is the Native Violet. The State tree is the White Oak. The State name is Illinois.

3 Illinois History In Early 1673 two French explorers Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet were the first Europeans in the area. In 1699 French settlers established the first settlement of the area, which is near present day East St. Louis. Illinois was the 21 st state to enter the union on December 3 rd, 1818.

4 Government The current Governor of Illinois is Pat Quinn. The State motto is “ State, Sovereignty, National Union.”

5 Zones and Regions Illinois is apart of the Central Time Zone. Illinois belong to the Midwest Region based upon the Census Bureau.

6 The People of Illinois The population of Illinois 12,830,632 people. The most populated city is Chicago, The Windy City. The racial/ethnic distribution is as follows White 77.9% Black or African American 14.8% American Indian and Alaska Native 0.6% Asian 5.0% Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander 0.1% Two or More Races 1.7% Hispanic or Latino 16.3%

7 Geographic Features The states that border Illinois are Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, and Wisconsin. Some major cities in Illinois are Chicago, Springfield, Aurora, Rockford, and Joliet. One major road way of Illinois is Interstate 64. It is an east-west route.

8 Geographic Features Continued The major rivers of Illinois are The Mississippi River, The Ohio River, The Illinois River, and The Wabash River. The major lakes of Illinois are Lake Michigan and Rend Lake. This is a view of Lake Michigan from Chicago IL. This is a view of the Wabash river.
