EXAMPLE 1 Using a 45 o –45 o –90 o Triangle Softball The infield of a softball field is a square with a side length of 60 feet. A catcher throws the ball from home plate to second base. How far does the catcher have to throw the ball? SOLUTION To find the distance, use the rule for a 45 o –45 o –90 o triangle.

EXAMPLE 1 hypotenuse = leg 2 = 60 2 60(1.414) = 84.84 A catcher has to throw the ball about 85 feet. ANSWER Using a 45 o –45 o –90 o Triangle
