By managing the sharing of data in a shared community we can leverage resources in a way that no single department can. Our goals in this should be to: Improve service Reduce costs Reduce redundancy and duplication Reduce risks Provide access, yet protect privacy We should carefully determine which information is truly private, and aggressively share that which is not. We can reduce costs and improve effectiveness by providing a neutral ground where information is translated into a common denominator, without forcing departments to discard their internal tools. We can provide guidance to departments who are looking for a way to avoid reinventing the wheel. 8 An architecture in which we: govern the common ground Information Management Principles The old ones no longer apply Management Old rule - CIO. New rule - community, leadership Data Old rule - silos of data. New rule, data communities People Old rule - manage the skills inventory. New rule - look for leaders, get out of their way. Standards Old rule - look for standard tools across the enterprise. New rule - look for common ground.
