FAMILY BOOK CLUB : HOW TO INSPIRE YOUR KIDS TO BECOME LIFELONG READERS Show me a family of readers and I will show you the people who move the world. Napolean

Building the reading habit: a return on the reading investment

Steps for Getting Started  Building the reading habit at home  Choosing the right books  How to have meaningful conversations about reading

Building the Reading Habit at Home  Family DEAR time Time and Place *weekly routine: 30+ minutes (aside from daily reading homework) *same place altogether (try different spots) *make it FUN! (pillows, bean bags, stuffed animals)  Book Club model  Reading on the go  Balancing print and technology

Now that we’re together, what do we read? Just Right Books for Independent Reading  Choose a page from the middle of the book  Read the page and hold up a finger each time you time you miss a word  1-2 words means the book is easy  3-4 words means the book is just right  5 (or more) words means the book is too challenging at this time Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him. Maya Angelou

What if the book is too challenging?  Pick a new book  Read the book aloud  Listen to a book on tape together  Don’t watch the movie yet- it’s a book club

Where can I find good book suggestions? 1.Lazy Reader’s Book Club - Danny Brassell has a great list of books and why they are on the list 2.Books 4 Boys – not just for boys, but books boys generally enjoy 3.A Mighty Girl Book Club – equal time for the ladies! 4.Jim Trelease’s Read Aloud Handbook http://www.trelease-on-reading.com/ http://www.trelease-on-reading.com/ 5.Esme Codell’s How to Get Your Child to Love Reading– planetesme.com 6.Scholastic Book Clubs – not only book suggestions, but the best place to build your home library

Added Tips for Success  Let all members have a chance to choose the books  Start small- short sessions, quick books and then build on that  Pair activities with the book- Play the main character’s favorite game, cook a meal mentioned in the book, go to a (similar) place mentioned in the book, make a snack from some food talked about in the book, draw characters, settings or events from the book  Keep at it- Rome wasn’t built in a day- if it doesn’t seem to be working at first, keep trying- it will catch on if you model it and show enthusiasm for it- kids love to be like you!

How to talk about books  Book discussions should be authentic, from reader to reader  Even casual follow up questions can be used to gauge interest and understanding

Questions to guide your discussions Non-Fiction  What was something interesting that you read today?  Did anything you learned surprise you?  What do you want to find out next?  How do you think ________________ compares to ________________? (compare animals, places, famous people, etc.) Fiction  What do you think will happen next?  What do you think about the characters? Do you like them?  Why do you think the character __________________?  What would you do?  Were you surprised when _________________________________ ?  How was this book similar or different from others by this author?

*Habit usually caught from relatives. SYMPTOMS Less TV-viewing; less computer-gaming; less boredom; feverish reading; better grades. http://www.trelease-on-reading.com/poster-previews.pdf WARNING: READING CAN BE HABIT FORMING, AND LIFE FORMING*
