4 Injury Causes Injuries are usually the result of:  Improper tool use, or  Failing to…  Inspect the tool before use  Use Personal Protective Equipment  Use guards  Properly store the tool  Use safe handling techniques

9 Do Not Use: –A screwdriver as a chisel –A 2x4 or the “butt” of a drill as a hammer –A bucket or a chair as a ladder Use The Right Tool For The Job

11 Inspect Tools For Damage  Inspect wrenches for sprung jaws  Inspect chisels and wedges for mushroomed heads  Check for loose, cracked or splintered handles (tools with taped handles may be hiding cracks) Crack

12 Inspect Tools For Damage Check for visible wear and tear Are all guards in place? Are handles free of splits and cracks? Are electric tools double-insulated or properly grounded? (GFCI’s) Are cutting edges sharp? (saw blades, bits, etc…) Inspect before use

15 Use Guards Guard: Belts Gears Shafts Pulleys Flywheels Chains Never remove a guard while the machine or tool is turned on

16 Guarding Machine guards must protect the operator and others from:  Point of operation  In-running nip points  Rotating parts  Flying chips and sparks

17 The point of operation is where the work is actually performed on the materials – it must be guarded Point of Operation This shows a radial arm saw equipped with proper point of operation guards

22 Handle Tools Properly Do Not:  Carry portable tools by the cord  Use electric cords to hoist or lower tools  Yank cord or hose to disconnect it  Work near heat, oil, or sharp edges No-No
