3. Plate tectonics Plate tectonics is the theory that the Earth’s lithosphere is divided into tectonic plates that move around on top of the asthenosphere. Tectonic plates are large, rigid pieces of the lithosphere. There are 7 total tectonic plates on Earth.

4. PLATE BOUNDARIES A plate boundary is defined as where tectonic plates touch. There are three different types of boundaries, which are called convergent, divergent, and transform. Different land forms and/or natural disasters can occur at plate boundaries.
