3 SSDI & SSI Three Types of Disability Supplemental Security Income (SSI) – Limited income & assets – At age 18 – no parental income used Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) – FICA tax covered work – Spouse & dependents up to age 18 or 19 covered Disabled Adult Child (DAC) – Parent is retired, disabled or deceased – Child disabled before age 22

4 Why SSI? WI SSI = cash & Medical Assistance (MA) or Medicaid WI’s MA thru Katie Beckett or Special MA Waivers continues until age 19 An adult disability medical finding required to start/continue > age 18

5 Why SSI? MA can pay for: – Caregivers – Medications – Medical equipment – All health issues

6 Why SSI? SSI cash is up to $889.77 per month - 2013 SSI can help pay for: – Rent – Telephone & internet – Food & clothing – Transportation – Education – Vacation

7 Disabled Adult Child (DAC) Parent has FICA covered work & is either: – Disabled – Retired or – Deceased Child is: – Age 18 or older – Disabled before age 22 – No Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) work – Unable to work at SGA ($1,040 @ month in 2013) – Meets medical severity test – Not married to a non-beneficiary

9 SSI & DAC Transition At age 18 SSI starts When parent – retires, – dies or – becomes disabled then DAC is mandatory DAC income can reduce or stop SSI DAC/MA Protection continues MA despite loss of SSI cash

10 Apply at Age 18 Go online Start the application one month before 18 th birthday Provide medical history for just 12 months Contact Social Security 800-772-1213 for a telephone or office appointment Prepare for: – age 18 living arrangement before hand – Legal guardianship or signed consent – Bank accounts shows child’s ownership
