4 Theatre Management And now for the event you’ve all been waiting for…

5 What is management?  Management: The act or art of conducting or supervising a business

6 Management Responsibility  Managers are in charge of handling all money matters for the theatre

7 What types of money matters?  Brainstorm all the financial matters that might happen in a theatre: From where does money come? Where does it go? How?

8 Who heads the management branch?  Producer: The person who oversees the business details of a theatrical production

9 Producer’s financial responsibilities… 1.) Secure rights to present the play 2.) Raise money 3.) Hire directors, designers, actors, staff 4.) Arrange for the rental of the theatre

10 Producer’s responsibilities (continued…) 5.) Operation of the box office 6.) Supervision of publicity 7.) Ticket sales 8.) Programs

11 House Manager  Takes care of audience area and lobby  Secures ushers and ticket takers  Rings notification bell  Notifies stage manager when the audience is inside or if a “hold” needs to occur

12 Box Office Manager  Orders tickets  Oversees people who sell the tickets (box office staff)

13 Publicity  Publicity is the largest single cost when putting on a production

14 What types of publicity are used to promote a production?  Take a minute to write down some ideas!!!

16 What is the most cost- effective publicity? “You’ve got to see this!” WORD OF MOUTH!

21 YOUR TURN! Design a poster for the show on an 8 ½ x 11-inch piece of paper. Your poster must have the show’s title, a tagline (like the one in Once) and at least one graphic image. Your poster should help the potential audience understand the mood of the show (upbeat, sad, suspenseful, etc.). DUE WEDNESDAY!
