USING STATISTICS IN ONLINE AND HYBRID STATISTICS COURSES TO IMPROVE STUDENT LEARNING
2
Overview Low stakes assessments HW with help Progress Checks/Quiz next step without help aids; multiple attempts and pooling to allow for students to use this as formative AND summative assessment. Using Item Analysis (IA) to improve student learning Utilize statistics from IA to lead discussions in class or online discussion boards Mean/median of exam scores Email by Criteria; use assignment scores to reach those struggling the most
3
Low Stakes Assessment Heartland has integrated this philosophy into developmental math and statistics courses using MLP features Unlimited attempts on homework and progress checks (quizzes) with stop-gap measures for timely intervention to decrease frustration Utilize the Study Plan to improve scores This allows both formative and summative assessment to occur with the same assessment instrument

MLP Homework and Quizzes View Statistics course in MLP View HW and Quiz settings www.heartland.mylabsplus.com www.heartland.mylabsplus.com
5
Item Analysis (Homework View) Utilize IA in homework to discover weaknesses or gaps in learning Multiple attempts Skipping questions Missed questions How to utilize this information Online or in class discussions More examples Including those topics in a subsequent homework assignment
6
Example of using IA in Homework Look at 4.3 homework in Kim’s current statistics course. Statistics Course Statistics Course MSL Instructors Tools MML Gradebook Select ‘Homework’ Click on the IA icon below the assignment you wish to review Export Student Details and Class Summary How to utilize this information to improve student learning
7
Item Analysis (Quiz View) Recall students do not have the “help aides” available for quizzes A maximum number of attempts may be set by the instructor
8
Example of using IA in Quizzes Look at Chapter 4 Quiz in Kim’s current statistics course. Statistics Course Statistics Course MSL Instructors Tools MML Gradebook Select ‘Quizzes’ or if in Gradebook already, use dropdown menu to change from ‘Homework’ to ‘Quizzes’ Click on the IA icon below the assignment you wish to review Export Class Summary (note Student Details is not an option here) How to utilize this information to improve student learning
9
Item Analysis (Test View) Tests cover more than quizzes Only one attempt Check to see if items missed on quiz were missed on exams (if exams are given in MLP) View mean and median of exam scores
10
Example of using IA in Tests Look at Exam 1 in Kim’s current statistics course. Statistics Course Statistics Course MSL Instructors Tools MML Gradebook Select ‘Tests’ or if already in Gradebook, use dropdown to select ‘Tests’ Click on the IA icon below the assignment you wish to review Export Class Summary How to utilize this information to improve student learning
11
Search/Email by Criteria MSL Instructor Tools MML Gradebook Look to the top right for ‘More Gradebook Tools’ Click arrow and select Search/Email by Criteria This tool allows you to view students in several different categories and email them according to that criteria
12
Find Students based on Overall score Overall score in the entire course Set the limit and click “no score” if you wish to see those students Category averages Allows selection of quiz, test, or homework overall averages to be viewed Assignment Performance Allows selection of individual assignment(s) to be viewed Work Activity Three options to select Name Email a student or students by name
13
Example of Search/Email by Criteria Look in Kim’s current statistics course. Statistics Course Statistics Course MSL Instructors Tools MML Gradebook More Gradebook Tools Search/Email by Criteria Select option Email students
