INFORMATION 2009/2010 Engine Engines LAWN MOWER POWER VALUE New lawn mower power declarations according the new machine directive

INFORMATION 2009/2010 Engine LAWN MOWER POWER VALUE Introduction Starting from 29 December the new European Machine Directive (2006/42/EC) goes in force. A few changes have a direct impact commercially on our lawn mowers and needs some explanations: New manufacturing plate with NET power declaration and the rated engine RPM. All sales and marketing materials must be consistent with the performance given in the instructions (declarations).

INFORMATION 2009/2010 Engine POWER VALUE on the IDENTIFICATION LABEL Ride on Lawn Mowers Power declaration All manufacturers must declare on the manufacturing plate the NET power in kW developed by the engine at the rated engine speed of the equipment. Also the engine speed must be added. This is valid for all petrol driven lawn mowers: WBH and all type of riding mowers (RO and FM in our case) Example of a manufacturing plate (silver colour) with the power and engine speed:

INFORMATION 2009/2010 Engine LAWN MOWER POWER VALUE NET power, what ? The NET power is the power measured with the complete engine including air filter and exhaust system (muffler). This power represents much better the application power. The normal used power indication for Riding mower engines (WBH engines are without power labels) is the GROSS power. This power is measured without air filter and exhaust system. On top of this the GROSS power test results are statically corrected by main of production and increases even more the power. As a result the NET power of an engine is significantly lower then the GROSS power of that engine.

INFORMATION 2009/2010 Engine LAWN MOWER POWER VALUE NET power @ Rated speed What is it even making it worse is that the power must be declared at the rated speed of the equipment instead of 3600 rpm. In other words this means tipicaly for WBH and RO mowers at about 2800 RPM or lower and for Front Mowers at 3200 RPM. The picture below illustrates an example of the difference between the GROSS power at 3600 RPM and the NET power at the rated speed of 2800 RPM of the same engine. Delta power

INFORMATION 2009/2010 Engine LAWN MOWER POWER VALUE Examples of NET powers B&S Powerbuild 13.5 GROSS power:9.9 kW (13.5 HP) @ 3600 RPM GROSS power:9.9 kW (13.5 HP) @ 3600 RPM NET power:7.5 kW (10.2 HP) @ 3200 RPM (FM) NET power:7.5 kW (10.2 HP) @ 3200 RPM (FM) NET power:6.8 kW (9.2 HP) @ 2800 RPM (RO) NET power:6.8 kW (9.2 HP) @ 2800 RPM (RO) GGP WM14.5 GGP WM14.5 GROSS power:10.7 kW (14.5 HP) @ 3600 RPM GROSS power:10.7 kW (14.5 HP) @ 3600 RPM NET power:8.1 kW (11.0 HP) @ 3200 RPM (FM) NET power:8.1 kW (11.0 HP) @ 3200 RPM (FM) NET power:7.5 kW (10.2 HP) @ 2800 RPM (RO) NET power:7.5 kW (10.2 HP) @ 2800 RPM (RO) NOTE: From kW to HP : multiply by 1,36 From HP to kW : multiply by 0,736

INFORMATION 2009/2010 Engine LAWN MOWER POWER VALUE Labels and S&M materials (Riding Mowers) The directive is requiring also that all sales and marketing materials should be consistent with the power declared on the manufacturing plate. The interpretation of this requirement is not very clear and even the EU didn’t make any guideline explaining how to use it. The GGP Group decided to maintain for this season the GROSS power on the riding mower engine labels and to maintain the GROSS powers on the sales and marketing materials. But with a note stating that this power is GROSS power at 3600 rpm. Please add also an asterisk (*) to all powers (NET and GROSS) and add to the brochures (for example on the last page) the text on the next slide :

INFORMATION 2009/2010 Engine LAWN MOWER POWER VALUE Labels and S&M materials (Riding Mowers) * Note on Power Ratings: Gross power rating is labeled in accordance with SAE J1940 - Small Engine Power and Torque Rating Procedure - and Gross performance values have been obtained and corrected in accordance with SAE J1995 Engine power test code - Gross Power rating. Net performance values have been obtained and corrected in accordance with SAE J1349 Engine Power Test Code – Net Power Rating. Actual gross and/or net engine powers will be lower and are affected by, among other things, ambient operating conditions and engine-to- engine variability. Given both the wide array of products on which engines are placed and the variety of environmental issues applicable to operating the equipment, the engine will not develop the rated gross and/or net powers when used in a given piece of power equipment. This difference is due to a variety of factors including, but not limited to, accessories (air cleaner, exhaust, charging, cooling, carburetor, fuel pump, etc.), application limitations, ambient operating conditions (temperature, humidity, altitude), and engine-to-engine variability. GGP reserves the right at any time to change the product specifications, designs and standard equipment without notice and without incurring obligation.
