The Aegis Weapon System
The Aegis weapon system is designed for AAW Centered around the SPY-1 radar and the command and decision system, integrated C4ISR Incorporates fast reaction time and high fire power. Able to send target information automatically to other units. Data displays combine input from all sensors.
9
Components of the Aegis Weapon System
SPY-1 Radar System Command and Decision (C + D) System Aegis Display System Weapons Control System (WCS) Fire Control System Vertical Launching System (VLS) Operational Readiness Test System (ORTS) Aegis Combat Training System (ACTS)
10
SPY-1 Radar System Purpose Characteristics
Primary air and search radar Primary fire control radar SM-2 guidance: Command guidance during mid-course phase. Characteristics Four electronically scanned. phased arrays Uses a four-bay computer suite. TWS techniques are used by the computers. SPY-1 computers also perform automatic anti-jamming procedures, uplink/ downlink, and jamming
11
Purpose of the Command and Decision (C+D) System
Performs overall coordination; controls all systems Provides the operator/ machine interface for Aegis Operator inputs via the C+ D system provide ultimate system/ weapon control.
13
Functions of the Command and Decision (C+D) System
Track file generation based on information from internal sensors, NTDS, and LAMPS Threat evaluation / classification Threat priority decisions Make/ recommend weapon assignments Recommend fire Training support
14
Reactions of the Command and Decision (C+D) System
Automatic Special - automatically fires all weapons (except Tomahawk, CIWS, and 5”/54 guns) based on the preset threat criteria/ Automatic: Performs all functions except fire Semiautomatic Casualty ( Manual) The C+D system is used to select the Aegis system mode (“doctrine”) and this determines how the system will react to the detected targets.
