2 WHAT IS LOGISTICS? Logistics - The science of planning, organizing and managing activities that provide goods or services. - - (MDC, LogLink / LogisticsWorld, 1997) Logistics - The procurement, maintenance, distribution, and replacement of personnel and materiel. -- (Webster’s Dictionary) Logistics means planning for and having the right thing, at the right place, at the right time.

3 Opportunities in Logistics Ranked number 78 in top 100 US jobs and number 20 among business jobs by US News and World Report. Department of Labor estimates over 25% increase in logistics jobs from 2010 to 2020. In Army, 62,000 civilian jobs in logistics or about 22% of all civilian jobs.

5 Sample of Logistics Jobs Professional positions in Supply Management, Material Maintenance Management and Transportation and Distribution Logistics Management Specialist, Program Manager, Traffic Management Specialist, Inventory Manager, etc. Trade and Clerical – Equipment repair, welders, supply clerk, transportation clerks, etc.

6 Recommended Education Professionals Logistics Job: – Bachelors or Masters degree – Preferred Majors- business, logistics, supply chain management, transportation management, analytical skills, and related areas Technical, Trade, and Clerical: – High school diploma – Certificates – ex. Welding, truck driving, supply technician – Frequently will provide training

7 Federal Professional Entry Programs Pathways Internship Participant Program- Employment opportunities that offer work and career experience directly related to a student’s educational career goals and field of study. Career Intern (Recent Graduates) Program- 18-24 month developmental program for college graduates; GPA of 2.95 is required. Both Army and DLA hire twice/year.
