5 Battery Maintenance Pb (Lead Acid) Batteries Lead Acid batteries by nature need to be constantly charged. If a lead acid battery becomes fully discharged, it is imperative that it be given a full charge immediately. This will prevent internal "sulfation" from occurring, which is a condition that will permanently destroy your battery. CARE TIPS Always keep lead acid batteries fully charged. If your battery serves as a backup energy source, be sure your equipment is always plugged in. Store lead acid batteries in a cool, dry location. Never store your batteries on ground, metal or cement surfaces. Always keep batteries clean and dry. Stabilize battery to room temperature 72 degrees before charging. Charging below 40 degrees and above 104 degrees will decrease battery life. Do not leave battery exposed to direct sunlight or extreme heat for extended periods of time. If stored for more than 90 days, give your batteries a full charge.

6 Battery Maintenance Agreements Energy Plus Concepts can tailor a Battery Maintenance Agreement to suit our customer’s specific needs or requirements. Our standard service plan includes a minimum of the following:

7 Annual Maintenance Routine The annual Maintenance Routine consists of the following: 1. Perform digital low resistance ohmmeter readings and inspection on all connections. 2. Rehabilitate up to 20% of all connections as required by above test and inspection. All connections requiring rehabilitation over the 20% limit will be billed on a time and material basis. 3. Verify proper torque of all bolted connections. 4. Clean and neutralize all cells and racks. 5. Measure and record all individual specific gravity readings. 6. Measure and record all individual cell and string float voltages. 7. Individual cell inspection, seals, sediment levels, positive and negative plates, flame arrestors, electrolyte levels. 8. Adjust electrolyte levels as required. 9. Record temperature of electrolyte of representative pilot cells. 10. Verify integrity of the battery rack. 11. General cleanliness of the battery and battery room. 12. Provide analysis and historical archiving of all battery data and furnish an Annual Maintenance Routine Report. 13. All distilled water to be supplied by customer or billed to customer.

8 QUARTERLY MAINTENANCE ROUTINE The Quarterly Maintenance Routine consists of the following: 1. Measure and record the specific gravity of every cell. 2. Measure and record individual cell and string float voltages. 3. Clean all cells and racks, provide corrosion control where required. 4. Adjust electrolyte levels as required. 5. Record temperature of electrolyte of representative pilot cells. 6. Individual cell inspection; seals sediment levels, positive and negative plates, flame arrestors, electrolyte levels. 7. Provide computer analysis and historical archiving of all battery data and furnish a Quarterly Maintenance Routine Report. 8. All distilled water to be supplied by customer or billed to customer Note: The intervals of service visits and intervals of load testing can be adjusted based on the following: 1. Battery type 2. Age 3. Customer’s personnel requirements 4. Environmental Conditions

9 Solar Energy Battery Maintenance Your deep cycle battery can last long if you take good care of it. You need to have a Energy Plus Concept representative check over your battery as part of an annual maintenance routine to check all aspects of your system. Here are some of Energy Plus Concepts basic steps to ensure the good working condition of your batteries: Fully charge your battery before use. Be sure to fully tighten the connectors and properly wire all the cables. Fasten vent caps tightly and checked from time to time. Batteries should be wiped free of all corrosion, dust and dirt frequently. Water the batteries after extended charging. If the plates have been exposed before charging, cover them with a thin layer of water. Check the acid level after charging. Your acid level should be kept " below the bottom of the fill well in the cell cover. Never fill or overfill the cells. When the battery charges, the electrolyte can overflow, causing corrosion and other damage. Use distilled or treated water. There is a rating for distilled water, counted in total dissolved solids (TDS). Water used should not be higher than 100 TDS. A deep cycle battery is designed to withstand a depth of discharge of 80 percent, but if this can be avoided, do so. The best way to avoid this is to keep discharges to a minimum. Properly sizing your battery is one way to do this. Another is to build a battery bank. Keep close tabs on your battery. As the novelty of your solar or wind energy system wears off, you may lose interest in maintenance. Of course, we caution against this.

10 BTS / UPS Battery Maintenance A monitoring program prolongs the usefulness of batteries. Without regular maintenance and service checks, a UPS battery may experience: heat-generating resistance at the terminals, improper loading, reduced protection and premature failure. Temperature, float level, cycling and other factors all affect UPS battery life. Batteries can degrade to the point that they are unable to provide adequate run time for a UPS. Battery monitoring can provide the solution to keep mission-critical systems fully protected by: Monitoring voltage, impedance and temperature; Providing for immediate warning of battery deterioration and imminent failure; Identifying batteries needing replacement; and Enabling replacement based on battery condition.

11 An effective program should: Continuously monitor individual battery voltage, average battery voltage and total battery string voltage; Monitor up to 60 batteries; Measure 100 voltages per second; and Provide an alarm history that enables the tracking of battery discharges, recharges, float and temperature conditions, and low/high voltage batteries. With proper preventive maintenance, the end of battery life can be estimated and replacements scheduled without any interruption or loss of backup power. When selecting a battery-dependent backup system, such as a UPS, battery maintenance technology and service options should be a key element in the decision-making process. Understanding environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity, and the nonlinear relationship between the battery's capacity and protection time, will allow development of the right solution.
