REVIEW OF LAST CLASS January 29th

Summary: We had a standard opening. We graded periodic table, signed up for the Atomic Super Hero elements, wrote notes on metals.

Answer the last class’s EQ which was: Essential Question: Identify characteristics of metals.

Topic/Objective: Name: Elements Class/Period: Date: Jan 30, 2015 Essential Question: Identify characteristics of essential elements.

Warm Up

1. Characteristic is that it is brittle. It is most likely: a) metal b) Noble Gas C) Nonmetal d) alkaline metal 9

2. Characteristic is that it is able to be pounded into flat sheets. It is most likely: a) metal b) Noble Gas C) Nonmetal d) alkaline metal 10

3. These conduct electricity and heat. a) metal b) Noble Gas C) Nonmetal d) alkaline metal 11

4. The term Ductile means: a) able to be pounded flat b) able to be pulled into thin wires c) able to carry electricity d) able to transfer heat throughout its mass 12

Today’s Homework Work on Atomic Superhero. It and the notebook due February 13.

Today’s Homework Work on Atomic Superhero. Notebook due February 13. Lab Monday.

January 30 Atom of the day Element: Zinc Protons: 30 Neutrons: 34 Electrons: 30 Electron configuration: 2, 8, 18, 2 Atomic Number: 30 Symbol: Zn Most common Isotope: 63 Zn 30 34

Today Select element for Atomic Super Hero story Notes Essential Element information chart - complete

Atomic Superhero Report Create a character based on the properties of the element chosen. Use your notes and other sources such as the Internet to write three paragraphs about your element. Cite information from the research to justify your character. Write in the 1 st person. NOTES: 1. What are my properties and facts? Symbol: K Chemical Name: PotassiumAtomic#: 19 State of matter: SolidColor: Silver Classification: Metal called Alkali Earth Metal Atomic structure: 19 protons, 19 electrons and 20 neutrons 2. What am I used for? Ex. I am used in the body to regulate the nervous system 3. Where can I be found? Ex. I am a mineral found in the earth’s crust. 4. What is unusual about my character and relate to the properties of the element? Ex. I am a highly reactive metal. When I am placed in water, I will float (less dense than water) and will ignite and produce a beautiful lilac flame. 5. Draw the character based on the properties. WRITING: WRITE AT LEAST THREE PARAGRAPHS USING THE NOTES ABOVE AND USE TRANSITION WORDS ALSO. Water Potassium element Add at least 4 properties on your character

Standard: 7 Periodic Table Notes on the Periodic Table A. Properties of Metals 1. Conducts electricity and heat 2. Malleable-can be flattened with a hammer 3. Shiny - reflects light 4. Ductile-made into wires How would you prove if something is a metal?

Standard: 7 Periodic Table Notes on the Periodic Table B Nonmetals 1. Opposite of Metals 2. Brittle 3. Not readily conductive of heat or electricity 4. Not reflective of light Can you make a distinction between metals and nonmetals?

Tuesday January 25 121 9Standard: 7 Periodic Table Periodic Table C. Metalloids 1. Have properties of metals and nonmetals.

Tuesday January 25 121 9Standard: 7 Periodic Table Periodic Table II. Groups have similar properties. Group 1: Alkali Metals-Most reactive metals and the least dense metals –Floats on water Group 2: Alkaline Earth Metals-very reactive also but not as much as group 1 Group 3-12: Transition metals-very dense

Tuesday January 25 121 9Standard: 7 Periodic Table Periodic Table Group 17 Halogens –very reactive non metals. Group 18- Noble gases (inert gases)- unreactive nonmetals

Tuesday January 25 121 9Standard: 7 Periodic Table Periodic Table I.Similar Properties Periods –Elements across the table. (left to right)

Tuesday January 25 121 9Standard: 7 Periodic Table Periodic Table I.Similar Properties Periods –Elements across the table. (left to right) Groups or Families – Elements in a column (top to bottom)

Essential Element Chart: 1. Use your periodic table to find all the information you can. 2 Calculate Neutron number by subtracting Atomic Number from Atomic Mass.
