15 Responsive Call To Worship
Isaiah 52 Leader: Awake, awake, put on your strength, O Zion; put on your beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city; People: Shake yourself from the dust and arise; be seated, O Jerusalem; loose the bonds from your neck, O captive daughter of Zion. 15

16 Responsive Call To Worship
Leader: For thus says the LORD: “You were sold for nothing, and you shall be redeemed without money.” People: How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.” 16

17 Responsive Call To Worship
Leader: Break forth together into singing, you waste places of Jerusalem, for the LORD has comforted his people; he has redeemed Jerusalem. All: The LORD has bared his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. 17

18 Not What My Hands Have Done Words: George William Martin and Horatius Bonar / Music: Steve Smallman
Can save my guilty soul; Not what my toiling flesh has borne Can make my spirit whole.

19 Can give me peace with God; Not all my prayers and sighs and tears
Not what I feel or do Can give me peace with God; Not all my prayers and sighs and tears Can bear my awful load.

20 On Christ the solid Rock I stand, All other ground is sinking sand,

21 Your work alone, O Christ, Can ease this weight of sin,
Your blood alone, O Lamb of God, Can give me peace within.

22 That rids me of this dark unrest,
It’s not my love for you, But yours, O Lord, for me, That rids me of this dark unrest, And sets my spirit free.

23 On Christ the solid Rock I stand, All other ground is sinking sand,

24 I praise the God of grace, I trust His truth and might;
He calls me his, I call Him mine, My God, My joy, my light.

25 I love because He first loved me,
He paid my sinful debt, He’s holy, yet forgives. I love because He first loved me, I live because He lives.

26 On Christ the solid Rock I stand, All other ground is sinking sand,

38 Confession of Sin Holy Father, God of justice and mercy, I confess my sin. I do not live in the urgency of your coming judgment. I do not treasure your promise of salvation. I am distracted by many things. I do not love my neighbor as myself. Forgive me through the blood of Your Son. Renew my love for you my God and my Savior. Amen 38

39 Heidelberg Catechism Question 2
What must you know to live and die in the joy of this comfort? Answer: Three things: first, how great my sin and misery are; second, how I am set free from all my sins and misery; third, how I am to thank God for such deliverance.

49 Listening to Hagar: Sharing the Suffering of Our Sisters Both Nearby and Worldwide FCF Women’s Class September 15 – October 27 Beginning with a study of Hagar from the Book of Genesis, this class will raise our awareness about how our sisters are suffering -- from human trafficking, gender-based violence, HIV/AIDs, educational deprivation, and economic crisis -- and provide concrete opportunities to pray and consider other ways God may be calling us to respond.

55 Scripture Reading 2 Peter 3:3-15 3 knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. 4 They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.” 55

56 2 Peter 3:3-15 5 For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, 6 and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. 7 But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. 56

57 2 Peter 3:3-15 8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.. 57

58 2 Peter 3:3-15 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. 11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 58

59 2 Peter 3:3-15 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

60 2 Peter 3:3-15 14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. 15 And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him.

61 Advancing on the Promises
Joshua: Advancing on the Promises  Words for Courage and Strength

62 Joshua 2 1 ¶ And Joshua the son of Nun sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there. 2 And it was told to the king of Jericho, “Behold, men of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.” 3 Then the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land.” 4 But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. And she said, “True, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. 5 And when the gate was about to be closed at dark, the men went out. I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them.”

63 6 But she had brought them up to the roof and hid them with the stalks of flax that she had laid in order on the roof. 7 So the men pursued after them on the way to the Jordan as far as the fords. And the gate was shut as soon as the pursuers had gone out. 8 ¶ Before the men lay down, she came up to them on the roof 9 and said to the men, “I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. 10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction.

64 11 And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the LORD your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. 12 Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a sure sign 13 that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.” 14 And the men said to her, “Our life for yours even to death! If you do not tell this business of ours, then when the LORD gives us the land we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.” 15 Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was built into the city wall, so that she lived in the wall.

65 16 And she said to them, “Go into the hills, or the pursuers will encounter you, and hide there three days until the pursuers have returned. Then afterward you may go your way.” 17 The men said to her, “We will be guiltless with respect to this oath of yours that you have made us swear Behold, when we come into the land, you shall tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and you shall gather into your house your father and mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household. 19 Then if anyone goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we shall be guiltless. But if a hand is laid on anyone who is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head. 20 But if you tell this business of ours, then we shall be guiltless with respect to your oath that you have made us swear.”

66 21 And she said, “According to your words, so be it
21 And she said, “According to your words, so be it.” Then she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window. 22 ¶ They departed and went into the hills and remained there three days until the pursuers returned, and the pursuers searched all along the way and found nothing. 23 Then the two men returned. They came down from the hills and passed over and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and they told him all that had happened to them. 24 And they said to Joshua, “Truly the LORD has given all the land into our hands. And also, all the inhabitants of the land melt away because of us.”

67 “The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.” ― Richard Dawkins, The God Delusion

75 Compassion becomes possible when we perceive people as the sinned-against, as well as the sinning
Harvie Conn, Evangelism: Doing Justice and Preaching Grace

76 “Jesus’ evangelism in the Nazareth synagogue is the announcement of the Jubilee year blessing—good news for society’s leftovers, the etceteras of culture, the poor, the imprisoned, the blind, the downtrodden (Luke 4:18-21).” Harvie Conn
