Mandate of the ICM section Vacuum control systems of all accelerators Operate, maintain & upgrade Monitor & report the status of the vacuum control systems Organise stand-by service, including spare equipment, documentation & training Plan maintenance activities Integration of layout changes Design & procurement of new components Plan & execute repair / consolidation activities * Plan & execute shutdown activities * Standardise and upgrade power supplies, interlocks and vacuum controls Follow-up the evolution of industrial controls Propose and implement modernisation of existing controls Interlock definition & management for all accelerators Vacuum monitoring tools and databases for all accelerators Follow up, maintain & update the program suites (e.g. PVSS, alarm & logging programs) Manage the databases required to control the vacuum systems including a “study” version Development of database interfaces for maintenance & logistic activities Liaise with AB/CO and LHC database Support to VAC laboratories Provide support for electronics and automation to the VAC laboratories Isabelle Laugier, AT/VAC February 7th 2008

History 1: Software Shutdown 2001-2002: Introduction of Siemens PLCs into the SPS Vacuum control system. 2002: First PVSS application for the SPS developed by AT/VAC following CERN recommendations. 2003: Start of the collaboration with IHEP Protvino to move the Xmotif application for the SPS, developed by them in 1995, to PVSS Scada system. 2004: Reorganization of the SPS vacuum database to be able to create PVSS and PLC configuration files. 2005: Creation of the LEIR application using exactly the same data driven software as the SPS. Creation of the LEIR database with identical structure as the SPS DB for its configuration. 2005: Creation of the LHC vacuum database using the LHC layout DB(managed by TS/MME & AB/CO) as reference. Vacuum data were inserted manually. The structure is identical to SPS and LEIR databases. 2006: Introduction of the QRL application using the same software as for the SPS and the LEIR. Data are coming from our “new” LHC DB. Since then, applications have evolved mainly by inserting all the data for the LHC and new features. The 4 LHC, the SPS and the LEIR vacuum control systems are identically. 2008: Change of the Linac2&3 machines to follow our new type of control system. Project to change all PS machines is planned in the forthcoming years. Isabelle Laugier, AT/VAC February 7 th 2008

History 2: hardware Shutdown 2001-02: Installation of the new type of ion pump power supplies, new cabling and Profibus card to control gauges in the SPS. Shutdown 2002-03: installation of a new type of sector valves control in the SPS. 2004: Start of LEP ion pump power supply modifications to be similar to SPS and to be installed in LHC. 2005: Installation of the new LEIR system using LHC modified ion pump power supply, same Profibus card for gauges and sector valves control as used in the SPS. Introduction of new ion gauge controller in LEIR with Profibus communication. 2005-06: Start of the LHC installation using the same hardware as LEIR adding BIC liaison inside sector valves controller. The 4 LHC, the SPS and the LEIR vacuum control systems have the same material installed in racks and tunnel. The main advantage is an important reduction of maintenance problems, interventions and spares management. 80% of the section activities for the last years are cabling, design & conception of racks and installation tests. 5 Our software and hardware PVSS and PLC software are stored and archived in dfs server Vacuum databases are on accdb, managed by IT. Operational PVSS servers are on window machines in building 513, managed by IT. PLCs are S7/300 and S7/400 Siemens PLCs on TN The vacuum group has a stand-by service helped by Vacuum control Experts and available all the year. Isabelle Laugier, AT/VAC February 7th 2008

Interfaces with Main control system Support of “old” vacuum control system in PS complex: AB/CO/FE Publication of PS data to meas + logging DB: AB/CO/AP Support of our Window machines (PVSS servers): IT/IS Support of our Linux Machine: AB/CO/IN Support for Oracle: IT/DES Support for PVSS: IT/CO/BE Publication of vacuum data to DIP & CMW: AB/CO/AP Connection to Laser: AB/CO/AP Connection to the LHC logging Database: AB/CO/DM Communication with BIC: AB/CO/MI Interface with Unicos (usage of login, Laser & LHC logging facilities): AB/CO/IS Isabelle Laugier, AT/VAC February 7th 2008

Future Needs Usage of Diamon to monitor our PLCs Siemens S5 programmer to renew Rex/Isolde vacuum control system. Introduce the “Mode Machine” in Laser project (on going)
