Ethical Use of Computers

Ethics and Responsibilities in the Computing Process Every profession operates with a set of ethics that help to define the responsibilities of people who practice the profession. A professional in the computing industry, like any other professional, has knowledge that enables him or her to do certain things that others cannot do. Knowledge of computers can be a powerful means to affect positive change. Knowledge also can be used in unethical ways. What are some ways the computer can be used unethically?

Software piracy: The unauthorized copying of software for either personal use or use by others. Computing professionals have an ethical obligation to not engage in software piracy. This rule isn’t restricted to duplicating copyrighted software; it includes plagiarism of all or part of code that belongs to anyone else.

Privacy of Data The computer enables the compilation of databases containing useful information about people. A computing professional has a responsibility to avoid taking advantage of special access that he or she may have to confidential data. Encryption: Keeping data stored in a secret, coded form. What is the most common use for encryption?

Use of Computer Resources The computer is an unusual resource because it is valuable only when a program is running. For some people, theft of computer resources is a game (i.e.: like joyriding in a car). The thief really doesn’t want the resources, just the challenge of breaking through a computer’s security system and seeing how far he or she can get without being caught. This is equal to breaking into someone’s house. You may not take anything or even hurt anything, but it is still a crime!
