3 GABRIELLE “COCO” CHANEL (1883 – 1971) French Designer Started designing and making her own clothes because she couldn’t afford to buy them. Known for: First to design pants for women Little black dress Trimmed, collarless jackets Chanel No. 5 Karl Lagerfeld is the head of Chanel and has been since her death in the 70s.

9 YVES ST. LAURENT(1936 - 2008) French Designer Hired as Christian Dior’s assistant at 17; when Dior died 4 years later he was made the head of the House of Dior. Known For: being often inspired by art simple and elegant designs with clean lines with artistic details. YSL Retrospective

10 EDITH HEAD (1899 – 1981) American Costume Designer Known for: She designed many movie costumes for actresses such as Marilyn Monroe, Rita Heyworth, Judy Garland and Marlene Dietrich. She won several Oscars for her designs and was often copied. No Capes! Edith Head Gowns

11 Mary Quant (1934 –present ) English Designer Known For: Invented the Mod Look (boxy, graphic prints and geometric shapes, creates the look of a boyish figure.) First designer of the Mini Skirt Launched the career of the “first supermodel”, Twiggy. MAD for MOD

12 PERRY ELLIS (1940 – 1986) American Designer Known For: Designed casual, elegant sportswear. Made suits and clothes of high quality, natural fibers such as cashmere, cotton and linen. Perry Ellis Spring

13 GIANNI VERSACE (1946 – 1997) Italian Designer Known For: His designs often included metallic elements He was shot and killed in 1997 His sister, Donatella, is now head designer of Versace. Donatella Gianni

14 BETSEY JOHNSON (1942 -PRESENT) American designer Known For: Clothing lines called Paraphernalia, Betseyville and Betsey Johnson Created the “Punk Rock Look” Uses lots of vinyl and fishnet, bright colors in her designs, or lacey lingerie- like elements Ride Me Show

15 DONNA KARAN (1948 -PRESENT) American Designer She started a line of “capsule career wear” for women. (pieces could all be mixed and matched) Her line is called DKNY DKNY

16 CALVIN KLEIN (1942 -PRESENT) American Designer Known For: Invented the concept of “designer Jeans” Currently top designer of jeans, underwear. sexy and often risqué ads featuring half dressed models and/or sexually suggestive language.

21 French Designer Known for: weird, outrageous, irreverent and playful designs. Creates couture fashions for many celebrities Has a long-standing, professional relationship with pop singer, Madonna. Retrospective JEAN PAUL GAULTIER ( 1952 -PRESENT)
