1. Aaron Douglas May 25, 1899-February 3,1979

2. Early Life Born May 25, 1899, in Topeka, Kansas. Born to Aaron and Elizabeth Douglas. Encouraged to go further with his art by his mother. Received his B.A. degree in 1922 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Received his B.F.A in 1922 at the University of Nebraska and his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Kansas in 1923. In 1925 Douglas decided to move to New York and after being there for a couple of months he started producing art for the two most important magazines associated with the Harlem Renaissance.

3. During his time in New York he studied with Winold Reiss, who was a German artist that was hired by Alain Locke to do illustrations in his magazine. By his studies with Reiss it helped Douglas be discovered by W.E.B. Du Bois and Alain Locke.

4. Later Life In 1939 Douglas moved to Nashville, Tennessee were he founded the Art Department at Fisk University and he also taught there for 27 years. During Douglas time he was known as the best artist of the Harlem Renaissance. The reason people said that is because the geometric symbolisms he used and how he dignified the black image during this time of period was unpopular in this so called white America but he always thought African Americans should be seen as nothing less then proud people.
