Difference Between Rocks and Minerals

Physical Properties of mineral are the same throughout Physical Properties of rocks vary from one part of the rock to another

Rocks are classified according to origin (where and how it formed) either: Igneous, Metamorphic, or Sedimentary

Minerals are classified according to their chemical composition and the arrangement of their atoms

IGNEOUS ROCKS FOLLOWS WORKSHEET (GET OUT WORKSHEET)

Igneous rock is rock formed by the cooling and hardening of molten rock

Synonyms for Solidification Crystallization & Hardening

Magma - liquid rock beneath the earth’s surface

Lava - Liquid rock that has reached the Earth’s surface

The only difference between magma and lava is LOCATION

The solid grains or pieces of mineral that form when molten rock cools and hardens are called CRYSTALS

If a rock has only one kind of mineral crystal it is called MONOMINERALLIC

If a rock has more than one kind of mineral crystals it is called POLYMINERALLIC

Monominerallic vs. Polyminerllic (Will Draw on Board)

SIZE OF MINERAL CRYSTALS

Large crystals form deep within the Earth. Small crystals form close to the Earth’s surface

The faster the cooling the SMALLER the crystals, or the slower the cooling the LARGER the crystals

INTRUSIVE IGNEOUS ROCK

INTRUSIVE IGNEOUS ROCK A rock formed by cooling magma below the surface

INTRUSIVE IGNEOUS ROCK Cooled SLOW

INTRUSIVE IGNEOUS ROCK Contains LARGE crystals or grains

INTRUSIVE IGNEOUS ROCK Formed INSIDE THE EARTH from MAGMA

EXTRUSIVE IGNEOUS ROCK

EXTRUSIVE IGNEOUS ROCK A rock formed by cooling lava on the surface

EXTRUSIVE IGNEOUS ROCK cooled FAST

EXTRUSIVE IGNEOUS ROCK Contains SMALL Crystals or Grains

EXTRUSIVE IGNEOUS ROCK Formed on the surface of the Earth from lava

TEXTURE Fancy name for Crystal size or how the surface feels

Coarse Texture mean LARGE CRYSTALS

Fine texture means SMALL CRYSTALS, makes it more difficult to identify

Glassy Texture means very rapid cooling resulting in no crystals ex. Obsidian

PUMICE - type of lava rock, rough surface with very low density, cooled rapidly trapping in gasses
