5 Multiple Meaning Words

6 Definition: Words that are spelled the same, but have different meanings depending on the context. Example: BARK The sound a dog makes Protective outer covering of a tree

7 Multiple Meaning Words Example:FIT To contain or holdExercise and nutrition

8 Multiple Meaning Words Example:BALL The princess attended the royal ball. (dance) vs. The pitcher threw the ball toward the batter. (often round object used in sports)

9 Multiple Meaning Words Example:SWALLOW After having his tonsils removed, it hurt Alan to swallow his food. (to injest) vs. Micah enjoyed bird-watching. Today, a swallow was hanging around the birdhouse. (type of bird)

10 Multiple Meaning Words Example: BANGS He knew it was time for a haircut when his bangs kept running into his eyes. (hair over forehead) vs. We knew one day Zach would be good at the drums, but right now all we could hear was a series of bangs. (loud noises)

12 Putting it All Together For each of the following examples determine which answer uses the multiple meaning word in the same way as the original sentence. Use context clues to help explain your answers.
