unido.org/statistic s Emerging demands on industrial statistics and related data items Shyam Upadhyaya International workshop on industrial statistics 8 – 10 July, Beijing

unido.org/statistic s 2 Outline of presentation Current Statistical products of UNIDO Emerging demands of industrial statistics Some initiatives in obtaining data for resource efficiency

unido.org/statistic s Changing priorities Output measures remained dominant in UNIDO Statistics for many years Annual series of MVA and GDP Gross and net output by industrial sectors – mining and quarrying, manufacturing, electricity, gas and water supply at 3- and 4-digit level of ISIC Industrial demand supply balance database Apparent consumption = Output + Export - Import Quarterly growth trends of global manufacturing output SDG is expected to shift the priority to input measures Use of natural resources and energy in industrial production Treatment of residuals after the production process

unido.org/statistic s Sustainable development goals and emerging demands on industrial statistics Measures related to the impact of growing industrial production on environment Efficiency in the use of material resources Energy efficiency and increased used of energy from the renewable sources Balanced composition of input components

unido.org/statistic s Data items for statistical analysis of the resource efficiency 5 Cost itemsDetails Materials Cost of materials and supplies consumed Raw or processed materials, components, packaging materials, containers and supplies Energy Fuels (solid, liquid and gaseous fuels) Electricity (including that from own production) Services Industrial services Repair and maintenance Contract and commission work done by other Nonindustrial services Rental payments (except for land) Transport of finished goods Advertisement Insurance, legal and auditing fees Others…

unido.org/statistic s Indicators of the use of resources 1.Input output ratio derived from value added output ratio 2.Share of material input (M) or energy input (E) in total input (IC) 3.Material intensity Use of material resources per unit of output (Y) 4.Energy intensity Energy use per unit of output 5.Resource intensity Use of material and energy resources per unit of output Inverse measures indicate efficiency

unido.org/statistic s Compositional analysis of input data Conceptually, input and output structure is of compositional nature Output = Intermediate input + Compensation of employees + Operating surplus Intermediate input = material cost + energy cost + service cost The sample space of this kind of composition is defined in a simplex as; Attempt has been made to analyze three input components x 1 – material cost x 2 - energy cost x 3 - cost of services

unido.org/statistic s Illustration from currently available data Source: UNIDO Database

unido.org/statistic s Example of compositional analysis of resource efficiency A 2×2 matrix is generated from the relation Output = Input + VA Hypothesis: resource efficiency is independent from the technology This hypothesis was rejected due to low value of p = 0.0012 Alternatively, resource efficiency found dependant to technological intensity. LTHT InputX 11 X 12 VAX 21 X 22

unido.org/statistic s Results of the log-ratio transformation 10 Indicates the extent of dependence of studies variables Groups the countries with similar characteristics

unido.org/statistic s Preliminary study of UNIDO on input data 11 Some data/methodology issues Different definitions of variables. Input data available only as total, no disaggregated data available When disaggrgated data are available, the sum of reported input items did not equal to the total input sum of input items ≠ output – VA In some countries – input data are not the part of ASI but captured by the diffrent data collection programme

unido.org/statistic s Data items on energy use 12

unido.org/statistic s Data items on material use 13

unido.org/statistic s 14 Final remarks Statistics of resource efficiency and environmental sustainability are not merely an international agenda NSOs will soon be asked to supply these data from official statistics In the process of implementing IRIS 2008, NSOs could initiate the ground work on how to respond to emerging demands

unido.org/statistic s Thank you
