1 7.1 The Meanings of Ratio, Rate, and Proportion
Chelsea Ogilvie & Ashley Regan

2 Ratio Ratio: A specific type of relationship between two quantities.
Example: The ratio of flour to milk for a muffin recipe is 6 to 2. For every 6 cups of flour, there are 2 cups of milk

3 Ratio Practice The flour to milk ratio for the muffins was 6:2, so if we only had 3 cups of flour, how much milk would we need? One cup of milk

4 Rate Rate: The ratio between two quantities that are measured in different units. Example: Speed is calculated as a rate because it is the ratio of distance traveled to elapsed time.

5 Rate Practice John is driving at a constant speed of 10 miles every 12 minutes. Draw a double number line and use it to show at least 3 other equivalent rates.

6 Proportion Proportion: The statement that two ratios are equivalent.
Example: The equation 7:2 = 14:4 is a proportion.

7 Proportion Practice Give an example of a proportion of 5:3. 10:6 15:9
20:12 25:15
