2 The eye is an important sense organ. It takes light and images from the world around us and sends them as an electrical impulse to the brain. Parts: Cornea: this is the front outer covering of the eye. It helps protect the pupil, lens and iris of the eye. Pupil: hole in the iris that lets light into the eye. Iris: coloured part of the eye. Changes to let in more or less light. (makes pupil bigger in dim light) Lens: this helps to focus the light on the retina (the back of the eye). Retina: the back of the eye, like a screen, where the image is projected.

3 Optic nerve: this is attached to the brain. The electrical impulse passes along this to the brain so the brain can make a picture. Vitreous gel: this is inside the eyeball. It helps keep the shape of the eyeball. If too much gel is present it can cause damage to the retina, this is known as glaucoma.
