5 Tax Register as Self employed Keep approx 1/3 of earnings from each invoice Tax & NIC = Self assessment online Submitted LATEST by 31 st January 2013 for work done 6 th April 2011 to 5 th April 2012 Get 2 tax periods a year – Jan & July National insurance contributions – Class 1 – done by employer when employed & on PAYE – Class 2 – self employed - flat rate twice a year (jan & july) – Class 4 - self employed - pay when do self assessment as proportion of self employed earnings

7 Indemnity MDU – Locum cover worked out based on number of sessions Can get cover in blocks E.g. 1 session per week = 52 sessions Use these all in one go or spread out through year Can add in ‘fixed’ sessions i.e 4 session regular until date X

8 Pay Negotiable Be fair to yourself and to the practice £80 per hour £225 per session £450 per full day £25 per visit – when to type it up? Above includes doing own referrals/paper work Leave a ‘tidy desk’

9 Extra tips Get an accountant – helps with tax return and claiming back tax free benefits Proportion of car/computer/stationery etc If doing maternity locum check policy re annual leave / study leave If employed for more than 6 months by a practice, you are classed as ‘salaried’ for purposes of pension and other rights PDP / Appraisal – keep log of this as you go
