Professional sports photography is a branch of photojournalism while amateur photography is a type of vernacular photography. Many newspapers, magazines, and advertisement companies hire sports photographers. Depending on the sport, the difficulties vary. Photographers will have to find access to VIP positions for the best pictures at professional games and be present at the field of action for the best pictures. In the next 5 years, the popularity of sports photography is expected to grow.

Sports Photography Equipment Digital Single Lens Reflex camera (DSLR)
High shutter speeds Interchangeable lenses with 50mm Can be zoomed to 300mm Monopod/tripod Canon EOS-1D Mark IV Nikon D4 The best cameras are Digital Single Lens Reflex cameras with high shutter speeds. The shutter speeds help freeze motion and capture better pictures. Wide lenses are also a must. It is easier to take a wide shot of a subject and crop it later rather than take a close up of a fast moving object. Monopods or tripods help to stabilize the camera for clearer, less shaky pictures. Some popular cameras used are the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV and the Nikon D4.

Long distance and special VIP sports are the best. The shutter speed must be fast as well as the ISO speed. Most of the time, photographers create a picture with an out of focus background. This is to help isolate the subject, which is usually fast moving, and helps to create a clearer picture. One example is the motorcycle picture to the right.
