Millennium Development Goals 15 Year Implementation 2000 to 2015 1.End poverty and hunger 2.Universal education 3.Gender equality 4.Child health 5.Maternal health 6.Combat HIV/AIDS 7.Environmental sustainability 8.Global partnership

Goal 7: Environmental sustainability Four targets – Target 7.A: Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programmes and reverse the loss of environmental resources – Target 7.B: Reduce biodiversity loss, achieving, by 2010, a significant reduction in the rate of loss – Target 7.C: Halve, by 2015, the proportion of the population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation – Target 7.D: By 2020, to have achieved a significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers

Why is WHO interested in MDG for water and sanitation? Target 7.C: Halve, by 2015, the proportion of the population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation 1.End poverty and hunger 2.Universal education 3.Gender equality 4.Child health 5.Maternal health 6.Combat HIV/AIDS 7.Environmental sustainability 8.Global partnership

Why are water and sanitation so closely associated? The F Diagram!

How do we measure progress against the MDGs for water and sanitation? Joint Monitoring Program (JMP) of UNICEF and WHO conducts global annual reviews Figures are reported usually about the same time as World Water Day and the report is always for the situation two years before – as data processing and report writing and production take a long time. Baseline for MDG targets is 1990 JMP reports in access to water and sanitation in urban and rural areas

What do we mean by IMPROVED water supply and sanitation ? Improved Drinking Water Use of: Piped water into dwelling, yard or plot Public tap or standpipe Tubewell or borehole Protected spring Protected dug well Rainwater collection Improved Sanitation Use of: Flush or pour-flush to: – Piped sewer system – Septic tank – Pit latrine Ventilated Improved Pit latrine Pit latrine with slab Composting toilet

How is the world doing? The latest report was published 6 March 2012 and reports on the situation in 2010 Messages are mixed…………

Overall, the target to halve the proportion of people without access to water from improved sources was achieved in 2010! However, many challenges remain.

For sanitation, the situation is not good. The target for access to improved sanitation will not be met by 2015.

How is Thailand doing? Water Improved Sources - Urban

How is Thailand doing? Water Improved Sources - Rural

How is Thailand doing? Piped to Premises – Urban

How is Thailand doing? Piped to Premises – Rural

How is Thailand doing? Improved Sanitation - Urban

How is Thailand doing? Improved Sanitation - Rural

So Story for Thailand is Good? YES!But not perfect household (both formal and informal) schools semi-public places (e.g. hospitals) public places (e.g. markets, train stations, etc.), and migrants and border communities

Where can we improve? Water quality not considered in IMPROVED Hygiene and Household Water Treatment and Storage not covered Outbreaks still occur

Water Safety Planning

Water safety in the light of climate change and more extreme events Water quality and health surveillance Continued investment for capital programmes and operation and maintenance New Challenges

Well done Thailand! A great START………………
