13. History: The Colegios Mayores are institutions which have a long tradition behind them in Spanish university life. Their origins go back to the thirteenth century (XIII), when it became necessary to find accommodation for those students who, coming from all over the country, came to certain Spanish towns to try to find out what it would be like living together in groups. As time went on, those residences acquired a much greater importance; in some cases, they became the basis of the University. In other cases, they became cultural entities which were more important than the university itself.
