2 T HE P ARLIAMENT „országház” means the house of the country Main landmark of Hungary, tourist attraction The seat of the national assembly of Hungary Lies on the bank of Danube in Budapest Designed by Imre Steindl The construction was started in 1885 The building was inaugurated on the 1000th anniversary of the country in 1896 Neogothic style

3 B UDA CASTLE The historical castle and palace complex of the Hungarian kings in Budapest First completed in 1265 (IV Béla) The Castle District, famous for its Medieval, Baroque, and 19th-century houses, churches, and public buildings part of the Budapest World Heritage Site It was rebuilt several times The archeologcal exploration and the renovation were started after world war II

4 P ANNONHALMA A RCHABBEY The Benedictine Pannonhalma Archabbey one of the oldest historical monuments in Hungary Founded in 996 Contains: basilica and crypt, Porta Speciosa (ornate entrance), library, baroque refectory, the Millenium Monument, Our Lady Chapel and an arboretum. Present uses: archives, Szent Gellért College of Theology, High school, Winery

5 E SZTERGOM B ASILICA Ecclesiastic basilica in Esztergom, Hungary The seat of the Catholic Church in Hungary Tallest building in Hungary, 18th biggest church in the world First foundation was built by Stephen I of Hungary between 1001– 1010, as the first cathedral in Hungary o Work on the building of the present began in 1822 o Architect: Pál Kühnel o Classicistic style

6 S OPRON FIRE TOWER The symbol of Sopron Built upon the ruins of Roman walls Originally served as a gate tower of the town walls The guards indicated the position of the fire with lanterns at night and colourful flags in daytime, called the attention of the inhabitants to strangers. Reconstruction, after the town fire of 1676 The Fire Tower is also a symbol of loyalty. The citizens depicted on the relief showing reverence to Hungary on the referendum held in 1921
